Christmas is a social time to bring the cheer together in villages everywhere. Our quilter shares the spirit with her wall hanging featuring a festive village along with bells, stockings and baubles. Appliqué is stitched in place with wadding so little or no quilting is necessary on this wall hanging back free of stitching.

Colour Tip When selecting colours, consider what Frances did. For her appliqué and accents, she used darker hues of her background colours to keep the style throughout. For example, the blue background is a lighter hue of the blue houses and the red background is a lighter hue of red houses and accents.

PIECING

Our quilter pieced the background piece and applied appliqué afterward. 1. Sew 1” x 21” strips below two blue and two beige sections. 2. Sew sections together according to photo illustration. Press.

APPLIQUÉ

Prepare and affix appliqué before stitching in place. 1. Trace the shapes to the paper side of fusible web. Draw each element separately with adequate spacing. 2. Cut out beyond the line and fuse to the wrong side of chosen fabric. 3. Cut out on the line; this ensures the adhesive applies to the edge of the patches. Follow fusible web manufacturer’s instructions for best results. 4. Layout shape on the appropriate background. When happy with layout, fuse in place. 5. Layer the background with wadding–to be in place as stability for stitching appliqué in place. 6. Stitch hand or machine buttonhole stitch around all raw edges of appliqué.
