Bergweiler estate, 99 percent of production is Riesling and one percent is Pinot Noir. “Where you can grow Riesling, you can also grow Pinot Noir because they are


very similar in what they need,” Lieba said. In the Mosel valley, law prohibited the making of red wines for more than 200 years. In 1990, the German wine laws changed, allowing winegrowers to plant red grapes in the vineyards. Still the region remains ever a white wine territory, with red wine production totaling only 10 percent.


A visit by land or water Lieba said Bernkastel is very important for the tourists, and the tourists are


equally important for Bernkastel. Tourists can hike up the winding paths through the vineyards and observe the wine towns below from within the vineyard. Aſt er a winding drive or even a walk up the hillside, amongst the vines, a view of Bernkastel can be found: the river below, the village and the vineyards. Signs along the way provide information and maps for those wishing to stroll


through the vineyards. T e vineyards in the Mosel region are tiny when singled out. Marked poles designate the diff erent vineyards adjacent to one another. Tourists can also choose to visit one of the many wine towns in the region by


boat. Some boat tours stop at many of the nearby towns. Travelers can hop off and tour the local villages and even stop in at an estate for a wine tasting. For a fee, individuals or groups can book a wine tasting and sample from the vineyards.
