Winter Sports UP CLOSE & PERSONAL By Kirsty Hicks "Tour operators have some great winter deals to the west of Canada – and that’s what inspired me to try the Rockies. "I based myself in the pretty town

of Banff, where my tri-area ski pass covered free shuttles to the different ski areas. Mt Norquay is local to the

town and is where the Canadians teach their kids to ski. It’s small by their standards but I found it great for an afternoon’s skiing on a 'rest day.' Most people alternate between the

resorts at Sunshine and Lake Louise and Sunshine was my favourite. It has a great lift network, massive choice of long and short runs for all abilities, plus, being the highest altitude of the three, gave me knee-high powder for a few days – bliss! Lake Louise is the largest ski area in Canada, so after just a 35-minute shuttle ride, there are some great long runs for both skiers and boarders. Maybe next year I’ll be brave enough to do more than look at the Lady’s downhill run! There was plenty of après ski in

Banff too with everything from traditional pubs, coffee houses, restaurants and bars and even the odd night club for the truly dedicated. I’m glad I skied Canada and will certainly be back."
