Seal cracks to save energy and money Cold drafts can drain your home of heat and empty your pocketbook

Finding and sealing air leaks can save you energy and money. Here is a tip from Lake Region Electric Coopera- tive that can help keep your home cooler in summer and warmer this winter while lowering your utility bills.

Caulking cracks and openings can save you $212 a year. Find cracks by waiting for a windy day and then care- fully holding a lit incense stick or a smoke pen next to your windows, doors, electrical outlets, and other spots where    stream moves horizontally, you have found a leak that needs to be sealed. Experts recommend using water-  caulk to seal cracks and gaps that are less than one-quarter-inch wide. Re- move any old caulk and clean the sur- face before applying new caulk. Fresh caulk takes several hours, or

longer, to dry, so it is best to do the job on a dry day when hu- midity is relatively low and the temperature is above 45 degrees F. In addition to caulk, you can use low-ex- pansion spray foam to seal leaks.

Apply weather stripping to doors. This is the most common way to win- terize your home. First, identify air leaks around your doors, then measure the perimeters of each to know how much you will need to purchase to seal the cracks around movable joints in your home. There are a variety of different types of products to help you complete this task, but be sure to buy about 5-10% extra to account for waste from measurement or cutting errors. In addition, you can also pur- chase door sweeps to further seal your home.

Get a furnace check-up. While this one may involve the help of a profes- sional, it can be well worth the cost. A simple inspection can ensure that you will have heat when you need it. Also  keep any vents clear.
