Home-barn opens for tours in western Oklahoma
F
or a real taste of Christmas in the country, take the short drive to Cordell in western Oklahoma for the sec- ond annual Holiday Harvest Open House, December 10
and 11, benefi tting Infi nite Grace Ministries. If you’re craving a more traditional and warm feeling of Christmases past then you’ll love this open house complete with handmade gifts and foods by local Mennonites and Amish churches and families.
Jan and Monte King, members of Kiwash Electric, rescued the barn from demolition and turned it into a warm, open home. The process from barn to home began in 1917 when Frank Grimma built the barn on his farm about seven miles west of Corn.
Back then the barn was red, as was the fashion for most barns in that era. There was a reason for this - farmers added ferrous oxide (rust) to linseed oil when fi nishing the exteriors of their barns. The red rust kept the wood from molds and mosses and helped preserve the wood. As time went by and paint became more available, red was the traditional color of barns – and red was the cheapest color of paint before less expensive whitewash hit the market.
Frank Grimma sold his barn in 1972 to Jan’s uncle, Rayford See, who moved the barn to Cordell with plans to turn it into a home. Jan said her uncle worked on the barn’s renovation for 18 years and passed away just before the work was completed in 1990.
The barn sat for more than a decade until the 2001 Cordell tornado tore through the area. Jan and Monte purchased the storm-ravaged structure and moved it to their land only three miles from its original location.
It took the Kings three and a half years to make the barn their home. During the reconstruction and renovation they looked to other old buildings to fi ll in any missing pieces for their project. The King family constructed their barn house around the old barn’s bones, but they needed additional materials to fi nish the structure. Instead of new things, they salvaged as many items as possible from other old buildings. The walls, ceilings and fl oors are made from aged pine and oak, some of which still bears its original yellow ocher, cream and red paint.
Old door latches, window casings, and other prizes were pulled from similar abandoned structures and used inside the new home. An old wagon wheel was re-purposed as a stunning chandelier and old barn planks hold books and other items on rustic shelves throughout the home. “The ceiling timber is from the grain bin where weevils feasted on the dust and left lacy patterns in the wood grain,” Jan said. The home is decorated each year with festive decorations reminiscent of years past with an eclectic mix of new, vintage and handmade décor. Tickets are available at the door by do- nation.
