Instances like this one make the work transcendent. Her art connects her to her heritage. “I just have to count myself as a successful artist, whether I have wealth, which I don’t, but just the fact that I’m making these (pieces) is enough,” she says.

Jeri has much more than her own assessment – she’s widely recognized as an artist. Her works have been displayed in Washington, D.C. at the Smith- sonian’s National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of the American Indi- an George Gustav Heye Center in New York City, and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2007 she was named a Rockefeller Fellow by the Newberry Library in Chicago and in 2009 was named the “Red Earth Hon- ored One.”

Perhaps the premier ac- knowledgement of her work came when one of her pieces from the Smithsonian collec- tion was chosen by Michelle Obama to be displayed in the White House. Later, Jeri was given a special White House tour and was able to see her pot, “Intertwining Scrolls,” in the Oval Offi ce.

According to Dr. Daniel C. Swan, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the Univer- sity of Oklahoma and Associ- ate Curator at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natu- ral History, “Caddo pottery is an incredible art form with re- spect to design and technique, unparalleled in the Southern Plains. Jeri Redcorn and other artists’ work to revive Caddo pottery is in the forefront of the culture revival movement among native people today.” Oklahomans don’t have to go that far to see examples of her work. Pieces are in the permanent collections of the Museum of the Red River and at the Spiro Mounds Site near Spiro, Okla. She is represented by the Kiva Gallery in Santa Fe, N.M and Tribes 131 in Norman, Okla. She can be contacted through the web: www.redcornpottery.com. OL
