Global sales ofmobile devices increased in the second quarter of 2011 by 16.5 percent year-on-year, reaching 428.7million units, reported Gartner Inc., Egham, UK. Themarket research firmforecastsmobile device sales to grow around 12 percent in 2011.
Because of channel build-up at the end of
the first quarter of 2011 after the Japanese earthquake, which raised concerns about potential component shortages, sell-in demand slowed in the second quarter to 421.1million units, a 4.4 percent decrease fromthe previous quarter, reported Gartner.
Gartner's report also shows that sales of
smart phones were up 74 percent year-on- year and accounted for 25 percent of overall sales in the second quarter of 2011, up from 17 percent in the second quarter of 2010.
"We expectmanufacturers and distributors
to remain cautious about raising their stock levels in the second half of 2011, following the recent uncertainty on the world financial markets," stated Annette Zimmermann, principal research analyst at Gartner.

EAO simplifies inventory search, ordering
EAO Switch Corp.,Milford, Conn., has launched a new product search function at the EAO U.S. home page that allows purchasers and engineers to search for an HMI component by part number, as well as view EAO's on-hand inventory and distribution stock. A direct link is provided to the distributors.
The product search function simplifies the
ordering process, eliminating the need to look up the part on the EAO site, then again on each distributor's site, said EAO.
The product search function allows users to
search for up to three part numbers. Searches can be performed by the exact or partial numbers. A drop-downmenu provides available related part numbers in any given product series. Users enter the product numbers and click search. Listings are provided for each part, alongwith EAO's inventory, the distributorswho are stocking that part, and the quantity they currently have in stock.
The EAOon-hand inventory is uploaded
several times per day, keeping the inventory quantities of searched items up-to-date, said EAO.
