A distributor's point of view

Lee Davidson, Allied Electronics, calls themerger of NEDA and ECA a "winning team" for the electronics industry By Lee Davidson, president, Allied Electronics

A football teamismade up ofmany players who holdmany different positions. Just because one player's positionmay be different fromanother's, it doesn'tmean they don't work together. After all, they are on the same team, and they have a common goal - to win the game! Just like a football team, the electronics industry has different positions within the industry that fulfill different roles. The better these positions work together, themore wins we can get individually and as an industry.

The different roles represented are in the three different ways

electronic products go tomarket: viamanufacturer, distributor and representatives. I have been in the electronic components distribution industry for 38 years, and themerger of the National Electronic Distributor Association (NEDA) and the Electronic Component Association (ECA) to formECIA is the first time an effort has beenmade to bring all three channels of electronics under one association.

Up until now, these three channels have been fragmented,

making it difficult to collaborate on industry issues. Although electronic representatives were not a part of the originalmerger of NEDA and ECA, ECIA hopes to complete the teamby adding this third channel to the association. This is under way today, with several representative companies already joining ECIA. The new association will bring us together, helping us bemore of a team. All three channels are dependent upon each other to win, which in our gamemeans selling products. All channels are included in design, selling, andmarketing as well as the supply chain of getting products to the end customer. What better way to build a winning teamthan by uniting themall in one association?

The ECIA will help us better set consistent industry standards, 22 | September 2011

guidelines and best practices. This will inherently raise the bar on quality and service from each channel. Bringing better quality and service to our customers will influence sales all around. Plus, it is a great way to obtain valid industry statistics such as TAMand DTAMinformation.

promote the authorized channel to fight counterfeit products. As we all know, this is a tremendous problemin our industry. The association already has an inventory web site for authorized distributors at www.eciaauthorized.com. Furthermore, ECIA will be equipped to represent the industry on important legislation to help fight this obstacle.

Lastly, ECIA offers an opportunity to network with people in all

areas of the electronic industry. This is a great way to share ideas and concerns and find better ways of doing business. We can truly learn a great deal fromeach other.

Ultimately, I believe ECIAwillwork for the greater good of the

electronics industry because itwill unite the industry in away like never before. Any time you can bring a group of people togetherwith a common goal and vision, powerful results can be accomplished. I look forward to being a part of thewinning ECIA team!
