Network Rail has said sorry over its lacklustre communications with residents who are angry that woodland on a rail embankment has been razed.

etwork Rail chief executive David Higgins has apolo-


gised for the destruction of trees near London’s Grange Park sta- tion which were cleared as part of railway embankment works.


In a letter to Enfi eld Southgate MP David Burrowes, Higgins set out plans for a replanting scheme, and said sorry for the “lack of com- munication” with residents. The letter followed a two-hour meeting between the MP and the chief ex- ecutive, who promised to take “all possible steps” to address issues with the project, during which hundreds of trees were bulldozed in February.


Network Rail had found that the dry and crumbling embankment, moisture from which was sucked up by the trees, could cause the track to sink and needed remedial works.

Higgins said there would be a fur- ther public meeting in September, and said: “Appropriate funding has been allocated so that the resi- dents’ replanting committee is not unreasonably affected by budget- ary constraints. There are no plans to carry out any further embank- ment works on the Hertford Loop in the immediate future.


“Clearly there are lessons we can learn about how we engage with communities when we need to undertake intrusive works, and we are reviewing our procedures to improve the quality and timeli- ness of how we communicate with stakeholders.”


Burrowes said he was “reassured”


He said: “I am reassured by my meeting and letter that Network Rail are now taking seriously the concerns of local residents fol- lowing the destruction of the trees along the Grange Park and Winchmore Hill embankments. We have a clear commitment to replant trees and involve the com- munity in the restoration of the embankment. The public meeting in September will be a good op- portunity for Network Rail to say sorry in public and identify the les- sons learnt and be clear with the public about future plans.”
