The European SusStation project, involving fi ve countries including the UK and Ireland, has some real successes to show off. RTM spoke to project leader Richard Watts about the recent developments.

rom geothermal power to better roofs, and from new building materials to


fewer artifi cial lights, there are many ways to build better and greener railway stations.


The SusStation project is helping drive innovation in sustainable station design, thanks to European co-operation, funding, and shared best practice.


The project is a partnership between Lan- cashire County Council in the UK, Trans- link in Northern Ireland, Deutsche Bahn


Awards for Accrington Eco Station


Accrington’s new eco-station has achieved a raft of environmen- tal plaudits – including BREEAM ‘excellent’ status, a ‘highly com- mended’ rating as an example of sustainable infrastructure at The MJ Local Government Achieve- ment Awards, and in the environ- ment category of the Railway In- dustry Innovation Awards 2011


The new railway station, which opened last year, is the fi rst of four SusStation ‘demonstration’ pro- jects across Europe showcasing the future design of railway facilities.


Deputy leader of Lancashire


County Council, Albert Atkinson, said: “Accrington Eco Station is a landmark public transport project using up-to-date environmental technology to deliver a fi rst class transport interchange.


“The focus of our work is on de- veloping the best possible servic- es for local people and to get this sort of national recognition shows that Lancashire's services are some of the best in the country.”

Cllr Atkinson added:


“Even to be highly commended at this level is excellent news.”


The station has an array of envi- ronmentally-friendly features in- cluding rainwater harvesting, solar hot water and 40 panels which generate electricity from sunlight.


The build used recycled materials, including locally-reclaimed stone and crushed glass, as well as sustainably sourced timber, large areas of natural light and eco-mix


concrete which uses partly recy- cled materials.


There is also a booking offi ce, passenger waiting area, car and cycle parking, improved access, enhanced lighting and landscap- ing. In total more than £1.8m has been invested in facilities at the station.


The station is leased by the coun- ty council to Northern Rail, while the East Lancashire Community Rail Partnership uses its Educa- tion Resource Centre.

It is part of the Interreg IVB North West Europe programme, under the auspices of the European Regional Development Fund, with individual sustainable station projects also getting funding from other sources.


The partners have recently returned from a trip to Northern Ireland, as Richard


Watts, lead partner of SusStation as well as Lancashire County Council’s rail projects manager and community rail partnership secretary, tells RTM.


He said: “Translink are on the brink now of a station refurbishment at Antrim bus and rail centre, which is effectively the restora- tion of an old building. But the approach they’re taking is very much to restore the façade of a listed structure, but to add onto it, basically, a new build. They’re retaining part of the heritage, particularly the rail-
