RAILTEX 2011

an interview with Kirby, see page 24.

Debbie Cook, from the Derby & Derbyshire Rail Forum, told us on the fi nal day of Rail- tex: “It’s been good for us, and very benefi - cial for our members. It’s been a very good event and we hope to increase our number of members to the magic 100 mark.”

The trade show, at London’s Earls Court, was the tenth Railtex organised by Mack Brooks Exhibitions.

Many of the UK’s and the world’s big- gest rail fi rms were in attendance, includ- ing Bombardier Transportation, Faiveley Transport, Invensys Rail, Knorr Bremse, Siemens Mobility and Tata Steel.

Steve White, rolling stock service director for Siemens, said after the event: “Railtex have laid on a fantastic exhibition. Lots of people have said it’s the best they have ever been to.”

The Railway Industry Association, rep- resenting leading UK suppliers, played a prominent role, including jointly hosting ‘meet the buyer’ sessions with UK Trade & Investment. Speaking during the exhibi- tion, RIA Director General Jeremy Cand- fi eld said: “There’s a real buzz going around here. With so much communication going

on, I suspect that companies are recognis- ing more fully that they need to be here to be in this environment. This is leading to the growth in the show, which I very much welcome.”

Exhibition manager Michael Wilton said: “Feedback from exhibitors during Railtex was very positive indeed, with many com- panies reporting strong leads for new busi- ness and commenting on the upbeat mood in the industry.

“Visitors to the show were also very appre- ciative of the wide range of free seminars available. The keynote addresses and Net-

work Rail project updates were mentioned as special highlights.”

The fi nal day of the show was overshad- owed for some by the news of the Govern- ment’s decision on Thameslink rolling stock – to award the contract to Siemens rather than Bombardier – but the general feeling, speaking to exhibitors and visitors, was of an interesting and successful exhibition.

The big rail event next year will be Infrarail, being held at Birmingham’s NEC from May 1 to 3.
