Intertek explains its work providing stray current analysis on the Manchester Metrolink project.

ntertek, a leading provider of infrastructure and materi- als testing solutions, has been awarded a contract to support the management of stray current in the Metrolink extensions project though its Intertek Capcis busi- ness unit in Manchester.

Managing the stray current per- formance of rail systems is an important component in assuring the compatibility between new rail systems and their environment. It also helps to minimise the short- term and long-term corrosion risks to structures and services from stray current. These risks ap- ply to the railway structures, pub- lic utilities and other systems.

The Laing O’Rourke and Volker- Rail M-Pact consortium is deliver- ing all civil and rail infrastructure requirements for the Manchester

class expertise in the analysis of materials

behaviour, and cathodic protection for

corrosion rail

systems and in other industrial and energy infrastructure.

Inter-

tek also provides other materials and analytical engineering support services to the rail sector among its wider offering of analytical test- ing, forensic and infrastructure risk analysis, technical inspection, quality assurance and certifica- tion, to a wide range of industries around the world.

Metrolink extensions. It has ap- pointed Intertek to assist with stray current engineering and monitoring services across the new routes including the new South Manchester extension to Chorlton.

Intertek will review designs and conduct assessments to identify risks and threats to structures and

services around each extension and will monitor stray current at selected assets. Executing moni- toring surveys synchronised with the construction and commission- ing schedule forms a major part of the work, as Intertek works around the region over the next few years.
