Designed for SJ Trains by Helios, the product is made of snow-white FSC paper and contains a wooden cutlery pack, a wrap and a dish made from PLA (Poly-Lactic Acid), a biodegradable material derived from renewable resources. US-based Green OnBoard also focuses on

to turn heads, says LSG Sky Chefs. Passengers have recognised the change and the airline is profiting from the green message that sugarcane products communicate. Crews have also given positive feedback regarding the handling onboard. For this product, the company was recognised in the international Observeur du Design award programme. Shenling Environmentally Friendly Packing

Materials is another sugarcane user and one of the biggest manufacturers in China, specialising in eco-friendly paper tableware and packaging materials. With current annual production of one billion units, its biodegradable sugarcane fibre products include boxes as well as tableware, all certified to international safety and hygiene levels. The company also uses straw and reed in its products.

Sustainably managed forests Tristar’s PortaTray™ has been arousing high levels of interest in the foodservice sector by using unbleached kraftboard, sourced from sustainably managed forests, for a revolutionary new flat-pack, pop-up drinks tray that takes up just half of the space of a traditional pulp tray. It is re-usable, recyclable and biodegradable.

Kevin Curran, md of Tri-Star, says: “The

PortaTray™’space-saving qualities mean logistics, handling and storage costs are reduced by 50 per cent. By saving on inventory, space, waste and handling costs our customers are able to switch from pulp drinks trays without making a huge dent in their packaging spend.” At a newly-established industry working

group organised by Tri-Star in the UK, discussions looked at the need to give consumers more accurate information about the value of F&B packaging to dispel myths about its impact on the environment. Among the specific issues discussed was the important role packaging plays in extending the shelf life of fresh and ambient F&B products, thereby reducing the amount of food that goes to waste every year. It was also agreed there was work to be done in terms of educating the public about the relative sustainability merits of different packaging types. W.K.Thomas has been at the forefront of space saving innovation in onboard packaging, with products like its new BoxBag which starts out with the flexibility of a paper bag before folding into a more rigid box-style construction. From this it has also developed an ovenable board entrée dish with a fully-integrated, heat- sealed lid, the SmartBox. Such innovations are getting onboard rail services too. supporting green initiatives in the travel industry, sourcing products made from 100% tree-free, sustainable, and compostable sugar cane, including tray liners, napkins, dishes, bowls, ovenable casserole dishes, and lavatory supplies. The company’s sandwich wraps and bags are made from 100% recycled and compostable paper products. It has also developed a new innovative bottle box from the ground plastic of old bottles. A caterer’s packaging credentials clearly need

to pack a punch. There are a lot of boxes to tick if they are to meet the demands of consumers, crews, marketeers and environmentalists alike. Many are responding to the challenge but it seems this issue is very far from being entirely wrapped up. •
