Collaborative alliances create new opportunities
A
s well as the four acquisi- tions during 2010, Weir extended its capability and market opportunities during the year through a number of alliances and joint ventures.
The first was in May, when Weir Minerals
were appointed as KHD Humboldt Wedag’s exclusive worldwide agent and recommended service provider for high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) for minerals processing applications. High pressure grinding rolls, also called roll
presses, have been used in mineral process- ing plants for many years in the treatment of iron ore, copper, gold, diamond and various other ore types. KHD is an originator of the high pressure technology and has been successfully marketing HPGRs in the cement and limestone markets since 1984 and in the mining market since 1986. “Working with Weir Minerals in the mining marketplace was an easy decision,” said Dr. Ekkhart Matthies, KHD Comminution Director. “Their reputation and relationships within the industry are superb. They will help the KHD roller presses increase their presence and reach in minerals processing facilities worldwide.” Scot Smith, divisional managing director of
Weir Minerals, added: “Offering the KHD HPGR extends our portfolio in mill circuit and minerals processing operations around the world and will allow us to further our relationships and commitment to our customers.” During the year, the KHD HPGR has ap-
peared at a number of trade shows along with Weir Minerals products to a positive response. Just days after the KHD agreement, a co- operation agreement was signed between Weir and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd to jointly develop activities in the UK nuclear new build market under the brand WEIR-MHI. Under the agreement, MHI will design and manufacture nuclear pumps for nuclear power generation, as well as pumping equipment across the ‘conventional island’ of a nuclear power plant while Weir Power & Industrial will provide project manage- ment, installation and commissioning and after sales and will also be responsible for

the implementation of site health, safety and environmental systems. The primary focus of the agreement is on the UK nuclear new build market, however the joint cooperation may extend to other locations on an agreed basis. Ten sites across England and Wales have been ear-marked as potentially suitable for the building of new nuclear power stations by the end of 2025. Other sites may be considered for development beyond 2025. In November, the focus turned to oil and
gas, when a joint venture was signed with Shengli Oilfield Highland Petroleum Equipment Co. Ltd in China. The joint venture will provide high-pressure well service pumps and related flow control equipment to the developing Chi- nese shale gas industry. Based in Dongying in Shandong Province,
the joint venture will build on the success achieved by Weir SPM through the develop- ment of shale gas production in North America. Yang Xianping, chairman of Highland said:
“We are delighted to be working with Weir and are excited by the opportunity to be associ- ated with the Weir SPM technology and brand, renowned globally in the oil and gas arena.”
And at the end of the year and in line
with Weir’s strategy to grow market share in China, an agreement was reached with Lofty- man Engineering (HK) Ltd which will see the introduction of eight control and choke valve sales offices throughout China with manufac- turing and aftermarket support provided from a dedicated facility at Weir Power & Industrial Division’s existing Suzhou plant. While the Weir range of control valves is
already well established in the Chinese power market these new arrangements between Weir and Loftyman Engineering are aimed at growing Weir’s presence across oil & gas and industrial markets. The agreements will significantly increase the local footprint with control & choke valve sales offices located in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Jinan, Hefie, Wuhan, Chengdu and Guangzhou, as well as the facility in Suzhou. Weir has worked with Loftyman Engineering in China for more than 20 years, successfully developing the market for Weir’s Atwood & Morrill brand of check valves. The new venture is scheduled to start operation during the first half of 2011.
