WEIRBULLETIN | MARCH 2011

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO WEIR? DJ: The global nature of the business and its engineering focused, aggressive growth attitude in addition to the open and blunt nature of the way the business is run. My research also indicated the deployment of lean has been ‘best in class’ in this type of business which, having been here for six weeks, I would agree with. The opportunity for the family to live and work internationally... Glasgow’s weather aside!

WHERE DID YOU WORK BEFORE WEIR? DJ: I ran the rail business for an Australian services and EPC company called UGL - a top 100 Australian company.

IN TERMS OF YOUR APPROACH TO LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS? DJ: My approach is to identify and nurture talented people through mentoring cross business experience and being held accountable for difficult outcomes. Also to identify where change needs to be made if people are not performing and assist that change process as much as possible but be prepared to make hard decisions if need be.

WHAT ARE YOUR IMMEDIATE PRIORITIES? DJ: • Send people home safely to their family each day

• Meet the targets • A Weir Power & Industrial team that has the capability and culture to succeed and be proud of it!

• Successfully integrate YES, American Hydro and BDK

• Develop a coordinated International Manufacturing Strategy

• Develop a strategic agenda which can meet the growth needs

AND YOUR INITIAL THOUGHTS SINCE JOINING WEIR? DJ: • End user markets are strong across most Weir Power & Industrial segments

• Safety performance is strong with good engagement

• Lean take up is good at operational level – more can be done in support areas

• The cultural acceptance of the Weir Way was quite astonishing given the diverse spread, background and products. A common language exists from which to leverage change

• Product development and the strategic change to focus on customers during the last 12 months widely raised as a ‘big positive’

• We have made a significant investment in sales capability over the last 12 months. The challenge now is to use it to drive sales growth

• Real willingness to collaboratively grow the business across the traditional silos

• The people are amazing - very friendly and willing to help

I JOINED WEIR BECAUSE OF THE

GLOBAL NATURE OF THE BUSINESS AND ITS ENGINEERING FOCUSED, AGGRESSIVE GROWTH ATTITUDE...

Dean Jenkins joined the company from Australia in November 2010. Married with two children, Dean now lives in the West End of Glasgow, Scotland. He is an Aeronautical Engineer with First Class Honours.
