Collaboration brings best solutions


A recent project at a nuclear power station in Canada demonstrated how collaboration between two Weir Power & Industrial facilities provided the best ‘engineered solutions’ to the customer. Weir Power & Industrial in Canada se-


cured a major contract with RCM Technolo- gies Canada Corp. in 2007 to retrofit new actuators to 16 motorised Hopkinsons 12” parallel slide gate valves, originally installed over 30 years ago, during the construc- tion of Canada’s Bruce Nuclear Generating Station and serve as a major line of defence in the event of a loss of coolant incident by allowing coolant water into the reactor core. Rapid response programme produces results


Weir Power & Industrial’s USA Rapid Response Programme,


launched in July 2010, has proved to be very successful for the business. The programme was implemented


to address developing market threats, including third party parts supply and unauthorised repairs as a result of ‘emergent’ work that would otherwise not be completed in time to support the scheduled outage timeline. Working in conjunction with


Washington, USA plant manager Mark Gerlach, Weir Valves & Controls USA’s vice president of operations Ed Rogers established a dedicated team of ten and set up a manufacturing cell focused on supporting quick rotations for customers. Featuring a 24/7 response window, dedicated inventory, streamlined quotations and expedited order entry, the programme has proven to be an

effective tool in supporting customer requirements. One such requirement was at


AEP’s John Amos Power Station in West Virginia, which required a six day turnaround on the supply of parts for a free flow check valve rebuild that emerged during the station outage. Standard lead times would not have allowed the parts to be supplied during the short outage window. However the rapid response team provided resources to support this and bushings, shafts, piston rods and other parts were supplied to get the plant back online in time. As a result a second rapid response order was placed a month later.


The valve facility has since


implemented a sales and marketing campaign, resulting in an impressive 25% increase in spares and service orders.


Introducing Cavex Hydrocyclones in India


Over the past two years, Weir Minerals India have improved their market share in the cyclone market by proving their superiority over competitors’ products. Weir Minerals India have successfully executed orders for several applications and are now the principle supplier of hydrocy- clones in the Indian market. Cavex cyclones are being used in India for new applications in addition to regular mining requirements. One recent example includes the cyclones used for delayed coking units for the Indian Oil Corporation, which is the first time that Cavex Hydrocylones have been used for this particular application globally.


scope of project was extended to incorpo- rate seismic qualification of the complete valve assemblies. Using the engineering expertise of Weir Power & Industrial’s valve facility in Elland, UK, various options were presented to the customer, who selected the best technical solution and significantly increased the scope and value of the project for Weir. The work entailed the supply of all the valve ‘top works’ and a trial assembly was conducted at Elland where engineers completed all the associated engineering drawings, reports and provided a 3D skin model for the modified valve, while their Canadian colleagues generated a laser scan of the installation site located inside the reactor vault. The project was successfully completed in 2010.
