Indian team provides expertise to Weir W
eir India’s Shared Engi- neering Services team in Bangalore has been expanding its global reach and cross-division- al product knowledge in recent months. The
team which was initially set up 5 years ago to convert paper drawings to electronic versions has evolved itself into an engineering force which can support product and manufactur- ing engineering departments across divisions to meet their ever increasing demands. The Shared Engineering Services Cen-
tre now has a wide range of engineering competencies backed by state-of-the-art infrastructure.
Their service offerings have
moved beyond typical CAD services to ever more sophisticated solutions including value engineering, design & engineering automation solutions to enable faster response to cus- tomers. These innovative solutions drastically reduce the time taken from customer enquiry to delivery of detailed engineering proposals. When Weir India hosted the global Engi- neering Directors’ Conference in Bangalore (pictured above) during October 2010, the event provided an opportunity to the Shared Engineering Services team and its leader Umesh Chandra to highlight their expertise and present opportunities for collaboration with their colleagues across Weir. The delegates received a presentation on various achievements, infrastructural changes, new policies, operational issues

concerning project inputs from customers, peer reviews, customer feedback analysis results and vision for the future.
A number of booths at the event illustrated
the team’s capabilities, project execution methodologies, past projects and future pros- pects. The conference provided delegates with the opportunity to meet, interact and ex- change ideas with Weir engineering leaders. The Bangalore team is now working with
Weir companies across the globe to help enhance product design and provide lowest cost sourcing applications. A recent example was the engineering
support provided to Weir Specialty Pumps’ Wemco team in Salt Lake City on a hydro- gritter cyclone cluster project. An on-site engineer from India was deployed to help develop the concept for the clusters and once customer approval had been obtained, a team of engineers from Bangalore executed the detailed design and validation before generating fabrication drawings with the total project completed within two months. On the eastern side of the USA, design
engineer Karthikeyan Rajan was seconded to Weir Power & Industrial’s Massachusetts valve facility to help develop over 50 valves in various sizes and pressure classes. On his return to India, Karthikeyan trained a team of engineers on the products and processes for design in the Indian portfolio. Chinthan Gromicho, deputed to Weir SPM
for three months, was involved in modifica- tion of one of their pumps and a patent has been filed for the design concept suggested by him.
Meanwhile on the other side of the world in the latter half of 2010, a hydraulic team of four led by technical manager Sourabh Gupta worked with Weir Minerals Multiflo in Australia on designing an Impeller and volute liner to provide the improved performance required in a mine dewatering pump. Shared Engineering Services is adding additional competencies to add benefit to the customer value proposition to all internal Weir Group stakeholders. This is a continuing en- deavour and is seen as our potential source of competitive advantage for the Group.
