Strong outlook in the oil & gas industry
Over the last two years frac sites have been evolving to meet increased service
demands and reflecting the amount of pumping horsepower and pressure require- ments.
The average horsepower, lateral length
of horizontal drilling and number of fractur- ing stages per well increased considerably between 2008 and 2010. During 2008 a frac site in the Eagle Ford shale in south Texas averaged 18,000 horsepower operated by eight frac pumps on site and in 2010 the horsepower increased to 36,000 horsepower requiring 16 frac pumps for operation. Unconventional horizontal drilling rig count
continues to increase in the USA and Canada with global potential accessible in the near future. Horizontal drilling rigs in the USA have increased by around 150% since 2009. Liquid rich formations comprising wet gas or oil are the current focus of unconventional drilling, as oil prices increase and natural gas prices remain at relatively low levels by histori- cal standards.
Customer activity in 2011 is expected to be
focused on meeting operator demand in liquid rich fields. Weir SPM continue to keep up with industry demands while analysing future market trends.
Croatian refinery starts production
In 2009, Weir Gabbioneta supplied multi-stage pumps for the INA
Rijeka oil refinery in Croatia. The refinery is located in the north of the Adriatic Sea covering an area of 3.5 square kilometres south of Rijeka, the shortest and most convenient connec- tion with central Europe and the Mediterranean. The refinery has its own port, docks
and offshore devices for supply and shipment of goods, crude oil and petroleum derivates. This is connected by sea line to the port and petroleum terminal in Omisalj on the island of Janaf where the fully constructed infra- structure has all the necessary equip-
26
ment for the shipment of the petroleum derivates. The production programme at the
INA refinery includes liquefied petro- leum gas, virgin naptha, motor gaso- line, kerosene, aviation turbine fuel, diesel fuels, fuel oil, bunkers and liquid sulphur. The products are regulated by Croatian and European standards and production according to customers special requests stipulated in con- tracts. A team of specialists from Weir Gab- bioneta and Weir Services Aberdeen have been supervising activities at the refinery which is scheduled to com- mence production in March 2011.
Engineering customer solutions
A Weir India services company over- hauled advanced class pumps for Reliance Power Limited’s Dhanu power plant, the first of such magnitude in India. The pump displayed erratic problems that could not be resolved during inspection of the cartridge, leading to on site examination and repair of the pump. The customer was pleased that Weir was able to diagnose and provide a permanent solution without having to remove the barrel from site for repairs.
The successful overhaul led Reliance Power
Limited to recommend Weir to potential new customers including Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited in India who subsequently requested a complete overhaul of one of their pumps originally sourced from a different manufacturer. Weir also provided a permanent modified arrangement for a mechanical seal.
