Doing business in an ethical and transparent manner
A critical feature of Driving Growth the Weir Way is our commitment to doing business at all times in an ethical and transparent manner. At the end of December 2010, the Code of Conduct
was introduced which provides a clear framework on which to base decision-making and provides details of what is expected from every Weir person to maintain the Group’s high standards.
The Code • Sets out clearly the behaviour we require from everyone • Provides guidelines to help our people apply our values at all times and
• Enables employees to raise a concern if they believe an issue is not being adequately addressed
The Code also applies to everyone we do business with and we are committed to working only with customers, sub- contractors, suppliers and agents whose business ethics and behaviours are consistent with our own.
Our Heritage
In Weir’s 140th anniversary year, we take a look at our heritage – with snippets from previous issues of the Weir Bulletin which was first published in 1919.
60 YEARS AGO – FEBRUARY 1951 The Apprentices Friday evening class will be open from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Apprentices who live a long way from the Works and who wish to come to the Friday evening class during March, and would like to have tea after 5.30pm can give their names to Miss Robertson, not later than the Wednesday afternoon before the class, when arrangements will be made to provide tea for them in the schoolroom.
GROUP RESULTS IN 1970 Group sales £68.4m an increase of 15% on 1969
40 YEARS AGO – JANUARY 1971 Marking the centenary of the Weir Group in 1971, the 2nd Viscount Weir, chairman of the Group wrote: “We are fortunate in having the people, the skills and the experience, now as in earlier years, to make great achievements possible.
If we can continue to value excellence and to
understand how important the contribution of each individual is to the progress of the whole enterprise, we are well on the way to making the future even more successful than the past.”
Group profits before tax £1.78m down from £2.68m in 1969
To support the release of the Code, a number of initiatives have been or are being implemented. As well as the independently operated Ethics Hotline, various training modules have been introduced particularly for customer and supplier facing personnel and these will be updated on an ongoing basis.
As part of our continuing commitment to good corporate
governance, we monitor our performance and compliance against the Code at all Board and Group Executive meetings.
The Code of Conduct is available on the Global Intranet and in order to be fully transparent it is also on our website at
www.weir.co.uk.
