Powering ahead in renewables

The renewable energy market is presenting a growing number of opportunities for the Weir Power & Industrial Division. The Alloa Service Centre has secured its first operations and maintenance wind turbine contract at Clachan Flats Wind Farm with wind turbine manufacturer Alstom. The site, located in Argyll in Scotland, consists of nine 58 metre high 1.7MW turbines, which have now been successfully maintained for five months.

Commenting on the contract John Morgan,

renewables product specialist at the Alloa Service Centre said, “We are delighted to have

secured the opportunity with Alstom. As well as underlining our growing commitment to the renewables sector, it reflects our technical expertise and tailored customer support to the wind industry.” The project is a solid foundation on which

Weir will further promote its skills and engi- neering capabilities within the wind sector, providing a first class service to this growing renewable energy sector. Operations director Kenny Pebarby of ScottishPower Renewables, owner of the Clachan Flats windfarm, has commented on a very successful contract transition.

A programme of capital investment at the

Alloa Service Centre, to create a dedicated cell for the maintenance of wind turbines has recently been completed. Coupled with experi- ence in field and workshop, the dedicated cell channels Weir’s engineering know-how in rotating equipment, mechanical design and materials technology directly to the wind industry.

The investement is complemented by

Weir Power & Industrial’s growing presence in renewables through the acquisition of Spanish based wind power maintenance specialist Ynfiniti Engineering Services (YES).

Supplying first ever bi-national mining project

Product from Weir Minerals Floway has been selected for a major gold mine on the border of Chile and Argentina. The order is for

vertical turbine pumps for Barrick Gold’s new Pascua-Lama project, which is the world’s first bi-national mining project and is located in the Andes Mountains with the ore lying in Chile and the processing plant in Argentina. Average annual production at the mine is forecast to be

between 750,000 and 800,000 ounces of gold and 53 million ounces of silver in the first five years. Pascua-Lama is also expected to be one of the lowest cost gold producing mines in the world. The pumps include fresh water supply units and tailings reclaim wa- ter service units giving a critical installed base for Weir at the new mine. Shipment of the units is expected in the second quarter of 2011.
