CALLOO CALLEY Undoubtedly one of London’s finest and most exclusive cocktail bars. Situated in Rivington Street, the intimate and darkly lit bar is presided over by World Bourbon Champion Andrea Montague. But Bourbon isn’t all she’s good at, as her eclectic and delicious menu proves. The bar even has a secret area, accessed through a Narnia style wardrobe tucked away at the back. The decor is held together by a whimsical feel, echoed by the playful selection of drinks available. Serving up many difficult to find spirits and liqueurs, Calloo Calley is one for London’s most discerning drinkers.
THE NIGHTJAR Opened last month, The Nightjar is a classy little speakeasy tucked under a very unlikely looking building near Old Street station. But don’t let the rough exterior fool you, when you get downstairs you’ll find an elegant prohibition themed bar to quaff your hooch in. This 1930s style bar is perfect for a date, as long as you both fit in with the glamorous well dressed crowd. The extensive menu covers all the bases, with all the classics well represented as well as a few innovative options dreamed up by the highly skilled staff. Of particular note is the BBC, which is has green absinthe smoke bubbled through it. As well as providing an unusual smoky flavour, it also provides quite a visual spectacle at the bar!
LOUNGE BOHEMIA at the top of Great Eastern Street, serves up some of the capitals most unusual cocktails. Borrowing from Heston Blumenthal’s “molecular gastronomy” cooking style, Lounge Bohemia’s Czech mixologist Paul Tvaroh has an array of obscure and terrifying equipment to make his delicious creations. The menu is ever changing, but some recent highlights include the CC Cocktail, which is served with a caviar tin of vodka jelly “caviar”, and the Fidel Castro which is infused with a fine Cuban Cigar. Viva la revolution!
