TRON: LEGACY

Eye watering 3D fused with intense imagery brings Tron to the forefront of movie tech. After finally jumping the hurdle that was keeping watching Tron feeling like walking down the Las Vegas strip tripping balls, the title’s only major shortcoming was the appalling script. Still, the graphics make for a bumpy ride, as spectacular visual effects immerse you in the film’s dynamic qualities while you watch the characters speed through the Grid. If you were a fan of the original, you’ll love Tron legacy but might be left with a twinge of disappointment after watching because they never righted the wrongs in the uninvolved, overlong

narrative. Let’s not forget though, that watching a movie with the sound down is never the same, and Daft Punk came through strong and most definitely delivered. They exchanged their iconic synths for strings for the film’s score, oh yeah, and added 90 musicians.

Tron : Legacy is visually stunning. I just feel sorry for the animators that were let down by a disastrous feat of script writing. So... if you’re going to watch Tron this Decem- ber... tune your iPod to Daft Punk and enjoy.

UNSTOPPABLE

Thanks to the trailers, you’d be forgiven for think- ing Tony Scott’s (“Top Gun”) new film looked like nothing more than an over-the-top excuse to run into things with a big train. “Oh no! That runaway train full of hazardous materials is like a half mile- long missile… and there are 150 sick orphans playing on the tracks… and horses… and kittens… and police cars… and other trains… and helicopters… and whole towns… and more kittens!” And you’d be half-right. Yes, this is a standard action flick set-up: something’s gone terribly wrong and only a flawed, unlikely blue- collar type (or two) can save the day. But don’t let that deter you, because while you’ll recognise the plot and the occasional line of reluctant but unbowed hero dialogue, the near-flawless execu-

tion reinvigorates the routine and reminds you why they keep making (or trying to make) films like these. Most importantly, the excellent techni- cal achievements are grounded in refreshingly strong chemistry between the two leads, old pro Denzel Washington and young gun Chris Pine. Sparring like equals and forging a partnership amidst chaos, the pair give us a reason to care about the outcome while convincing performanc- es from all involved help lift “Unstoppable” from cliché to classic.
