THE GUESTLIST NETWORK | DECEMBER 2010
Starting his career back in the golden days of music Ray Keith has been one of our DnB legends and has introduced us to some of the heaviest basslines ever! Osh caught up to see whats popping.
RAY KEITH
Yo whats happening Ray? Just chilling, just chilling!
You’ve been through all the phases of drum and bass from day dot, but have you got a favourite period? You gotta remember that the majority of us were 88, 89 Energy Weekend World, Crazy Club we were playing House music all together by the time we got to 94 we had already done 5 years in the game. We were obviously the new look coming under Paul Oakenfold, Carl Cox, Mr C see what I’m saying-those were the bonified man. Nicky Holloway that’s were it came from so it was a natural progression Pete Tong was doing his thing then mans came along and we started to experiment putting kicks in the beats. My big first tune was the Orbital remix and it put me on the map as a young producer, it took us by storm it was fantastic and we remixed everybody and the Jungle scene was born, it was a wicked time. We all grew up together, it was the birth of the scene. From original House and Techno, I have enjoyed all of it, I have had an amazing crazy journey.
Can you think of one particular major high? I cant you know! There have been so many from playing at Energy or Weekend World, at World Dance 50,00 thousand people, Paradise and at Amnesia how can you fucking define any of those moments bruv! Helta Skelta and Slamming Vinyl or the Wax club in Stratford the original
club..its been fucking blinding I cant even put my finger on one moment it’s been an emotional roller coaster, look at what we have achieved and one of the biggest things I am proud of is that DnB and Jungle is British we invented it we made it. The Americans have got House and Europe’s got House the Americans got Hip Hop the only thing
we exported was The Beatles and we smashed it, the Garage and Breaks scene and now the Dubstep scene all born from Jungle. We’ve invented it, we pioneered it we toured all over the world with it and we still going strong and still in the game.
You have been in the game a long time and can be considered a legend in DnB, a veteran... but who would be your legend? There is a lot of influences that I have had in my life and looking at DJ’s play I have a lot Bob Marley, MJ, Derek May is an absolute genesis, there are lots of people John Peel and Annie Nightingale for what they have done for electronic music, I cant just categorise it to just one person.
So Ray you’ve been an entrepreneur for as long as I’ve known you running many different businesses, you must be one of the richest Drum & Bass DJ’s what do you reckon?! Nah not at all mate!!I’m rich in my health, my children, money I have had it lost it-had and lost it money doesn’t make you happy. I love working I’m a grafter, I’m a worker I’ll get up at 6 and go on the road, I DJ, I have worked at Black Market for 20 years that is now called BM Soho, I do radio shows, its all creative for me even then when times were hard I window cleaned I like working I enjoy it.
Your nephew Joy Orbison’s making waves in the music scene right now? Most def we took him in the studio when he was 12, gave him a load of jungle tapes hes coming from good stock and in a generation of Dubstep with obviously the House influence. He has got a fantastic career ahead of him.
Going back to your own production
you have a lot of classics, you have a unmistakable sound. What is your production edge, what is it about Ray Keith’s tunes that people say are bangin’? I do music music because I love it I want to see the girls dance-when the girls are dancing the guys are happy!I do it for the love of people, I want people to have a good time and let go I am very fortunate that I have been given a gift and I have been blessed to do what I do.
Whats your all time Jungle tune, the top tune for someone who didn’t know about jungle, what would it be? Talking about for the man dem I’d say Jah Bless, if your talking like a classic you would have to say Pulp Fiction and if your talking about a straight out right ragga tune I’d say Worries in the Dance. Or I could go 31 Seconds there are so many!.
A random question if you could have a swimming pool filled with anything what would it be? Two things Cadbury’s chocolate and Ribena floating in packets of them that would make me laugh!
What you gonna be upto New Years? You can catch me at Cafe 1001 in Brick Lane, I’m doing the main set over there. I have my regular sets over there called Babylon and then you can check me out at my live shows- Ray Keith Live and I have also got my first show on the 23rd Dec at East Village with New Wave its gonna be a big night.
See Ray Keith at Revival at East Village on 23rd December.
