THE GUESTLIST NETWORK | DECEMBER 2010 MENSAH

For people who may be un- familiar with what you do tell us a little bit about how long you’ve been on the scene and what sort of music you make? I make sort of UK bass music around 140, some of it falls into a more dubstep bracket other bits are more sort of grime I guess or are hip hop influenced. I’ve been making music for a number of years, I used to make drum and bass. I started making music when I was about 18 I’m now 24 but its only sort of been in the last year and three months that I’ve actually started to make some headway and really only in 2010 when I’ve found my feet doing it full time really.

Why do you think that this has happened now are you producing better music or do you it’s the change in the music scene?

I think it’s the hours I’m putting in, coming up to two years ago now I quit my job and I think that’s what made the difference. It also gets you being more creative because you haven’t got to do something in a few hours when you finish work. Also the way UK music is going at the moment there’s a lot of good stuff around and every one’s hot on it so it kinda means there’s more attention on it now, more than ever. With dubstep and grime being more in the charts it kind of helps us all really I guess.

Why´s your DJ name Mensah? Its actually my real name. I used to have an alias name but people were like why don’t you just use your real name as its so unique and stuff. Now at so many gigs I get ‘so whats your real name?’ ‘No it’s not, no it’s not’. I’m like yes it is! No one ever believes me even when I’m there with my passport and my friends backing me up!

You’ve just released Digital Dreamer, Kashmir and Big Up The Goons, what can we expect from these tunes? Well Big Up The Goons is the surprise one for me because it was just an idea it was like lying on my computer for months and no one had heard it and that’s been the one that people seem to have picked up on, I think it might also be because it didn’t get played as much leading up to the release. But Digital Dreamer is probably to date my favourite tune I’ve made. It really comes from at the time what I was going through and what I was thinking about life. I’ve got a lot of love for Japan and it really just kinda reminded me of it. It’s very Tokyo very new, very fresh, very digital with lots going on. Kashmir is a tune I did with an artist called Noah D.

So is the life of a DJ all about parties and girls?

DRUM&BASS//BREAKS//DUBSTEP 45 Alex Beahan

Here at TGN we are all about the new, fresh, talent out there. So we caught up with dubstep, grime and bass music DJ, Mensah just before he jetted to Athens to get the low down on what he’s all about, and what he wants for Christmas!

INNERSENSE @ Arcadia 12/11/2010

This night was heavy!! Hardcore, Drum n Bass AND Old Skool Jungle at their finest. DJ Hype, Fabio, Hazard, Nicky

Black Market, the A-list line-up goes on and on...! This South East warehouse style venue was perfect for the gritty underground sounds that were going down.

The main room was where it was at, packed to the brim and the crowd

skankin’ hard, but the second room was pretty sick too with more House sounds from Jesse James, Jade Cox, David Minns to name but a few.

All in all, an old skool pure DnB night,

which was just what we needed. 10 out of 10!

INNOVATION IN THE DAM

After last years crazy party at Innovation in the Dam, this year TGN saw nothing better to do than to jump in the 7 seater and wizz ourselves over to the city we love nearly as much as London - Amsterdam. We jumped in the club and it was off the chain! All the DJ’s tore it up and everyone was blazin! This was big! We only wished we could have stayed all weekend long... but we had to get back to work!!

METALHEADZ SHOGUNAUDIO @ Cable 18/12/2010

Um I wouldn’t know! I’m just kinda starting out, this year has been my sort of, I guess introductory year of having gigs every weekend and playing multiple cities, even multiple countries. I find its not a lot of sleep and lots of travelling but you know what, when you are in the party, it is a party! So in one respect yes but you know for me I think its all about going and play- ing my music.

If you could be on a line up with anyone who would it be? I don’t know...If I could think of anyone I would like to do some sort of I don’t know..Guns And Roses, Kiss, Stevie Wonder, Prince and Micheal Jackson, with like me and a load of my mates. And then having a massive party and seeing what it’s really like to be a rock star.

So Christmas is close. What do you want for Christmas? Um, I’m staring at a Chanel counter right now and if someone could just give me the girl off the poster that would be really great Christmas present.

Finally what can we expect from Mensah in the future? Lots more music. I´m kinda want-

ing to expand what I’m doing really and expand the variety of different music that I’m making so expect lots of new and different stuff that you haven’t heard from me and lots more collabs. I just want to get in the studio with as many people as possible and hopefully start getting some vocal tracks going really, and maybe try and get an album together.f the poster that would be really great Christmas present.

Mensah’s new tracks Digital Dreamer, Kashmir and Big up the Goons are out to buy now.

Since a managerial takeover in March of 2010, Ca- ble has become one of the hottest clubbing desti- nations in Central London. Initiated by the closures of The End and ‘super club’ Matter, Cable has been able to shine through, taking over the hosting of massive club nights such as Metalheadz, Swerve, Chew The Fat and Shogun Audio.

The club is comprised of three rooms with a maxi- mum capacity of 1000 people and three bars to eliminate the queues of thirsty punters and there’s a comfy seated area on the balcony overlooking

room three for when your feet just can’t handle any more.

Cable hosts some seriously SIICKKK nights from house to dub to DnB, it has just about everything a young London clubber could ever need. Last month’s Shogun Audio was undoubtedly the high- light of the last few months at the club. The artists were on form, the crowd was awesome and the place was rammed by midnight. We’re all excited for the next one!
