THE GUESTLIST NETWORK | DECEMBER 2010 CHILLSTEP
As an electronic genre, Dubstep has been increasing in popularity in recent years. However, as the number of avid fans are increasing, the genre has become a battle for the dirtiest, filthiest and just downright disgustingly disturbing sounds, with noises reminiscent of an angry pig being thrown in to a petrol-powered blender (don’t get me wrong, I’m still a massive fan of those!) However, there’s a time when our eardrums need a rest from being bombarded by sound-waves the size of the titanic. Is there an alternative to these filthy basslines that still contains the edgy, dark and offbeat rhythms we’re all so fond of?
The simple answer is yes, and it comes in the form of artists focusing on a more melodic and dreamy side to Dubstep, so lucidly trippy that if fallen asleep to there’s a chance you’ll never wake up, or at least wont want to.
I reckon that this sub-genre should appeal to most Dubstep fans, and it’s from the popularity of 16Bit’s remix of ‘Twice’ by Little Dragon, as well as the majority of tracks by Synkro, that this is being proved. Also, less well known artists like Kito have taken to the mellower, experimental aspect of Dubstep, as well as the genre-stepping Eleven Tigers with their ambient, flowing vibes, evident in their tune ‘Songs For You’.
With all this in mind, it’s clear that Dubstep has the potential to appeal to everyone, no matter what your preferences.
