HOUSE//ELECTRO//TECHNO 29 NIC FANCIULLI

2010 has been a big year for Nic Fanciulli from being a resident for Carl Cox in Ibiza this summer to starting up his new label Deleted. We caught up with this house-tech DJ to find out what to expect in 2011.

Julia Pezzulo & Joe Le Groove

Hi Nic, you and Joris Voorn will be playing a 7 Hours set back 2 back tonight and it’s not the first time. I think for us when we do an event like this we need to talk about it because we don’t get to do it that often. When we play together for 7 hours it doesn’t seem to happen a lot. The last time we played together it was at the Miami Winter Music Confer- ence.

How would you describe your sound? I don’t know. I just had an inter- view and they said where would you say your sound is and I said I don’t know because that’s why people have a problem with me. They don’t know where to put me so its quite nice not to be pigeon holed. Me and Joris come from two different backgrounds, I come from the UK scene where

comes from the Dutch techno sort of side. The main sound in Kent when I was growing up was Drum and Bass. Now Joris and I have sort of met in the middle.

Which Track would you say you got the most satisfaction from after you made it? Well I think it was the probably the Tiefschwarz remix. The Buick Project one. I wasn’t sure but then Sergio who looks after me was saying he really liked, but I still wasn’t sure. After listening to it again and again I was sold, and we went with it. I wasn’t sure the guys were going to like it and we went on to do some really good things with that track. We were lucky because that track went on to get a Grammy nomina- tion. It was so weird because it came from that background of Tiefschwarz, Tracy Thorne and being in the remix category and

up against people like Madonna and Coldplay, it sort of snuck in. It was nice.

It was one of those tracks that ignited dancefloors full stop. Yeh, it had a bit of everything.

What makes a track a hit in your eyes? I think it’s got to have a groove to it. That’s my main influence in music. It’s got to have a Groove, something to make you dance. I appreciate every type of music whether its Dubstep, Drum and Bass but it has to have the funk. It can be dark but it’s got to have a bit of swing and make people smile.

What are you doing in 2011? 2011 we’re going to be doing a Steve Mac album, which will be the second album; we did the

Mark Broom one this year which we were super excited about. He is one of the people who I was growing who managed to re-invent himself. There are a load of great new artists now. My brother is working closely with me on the label and we’ve got artists like Jordan Peak, Alex Tepper, Pirupa, Andrea Liveo and the whole family. The good thing about our artists that we’ve have on our label is that they are so enthusiastic which is what we want, they give me enthusiasm to run the label. I sit there listening to records but if someone sends me a record and they are enthu- siastic, I’m always going to listen to it twice as much because if their saying you need to listen to this man! Then you have got to listen to it and you get the right vibe. It’s nice to have the right people to connect and work with because I still agree with the tra-

ditional way of A&R of records. When I get a demo sent to me, I’m still like you need to change this and change that because I feel that it will work on the dance floor and they do it. We still work together on records now and the same goes for the Mark Broom Album. The traditional A&R method should be brought back I think. Sometimes you get the demo first time and its perfect and that’s great. The great thing is we get to test them week in week out, we don’t want to put anything out that’s not going to sound good in 10 years time.

What do you do to chill out? I hang out with my friends and family. I just had a kid and I’m liv- ing the family life. I love being on the road, I love Djing and being in the studio, that’s my life. When that finishes I get to hang with my friends then go back to work.

Normal stuff really, like Waking up in your bed on a Sunday.

I presume you will be doing a party at the Winter Music Conference in 2011? We don’t really know the line up yet so we can’t really say anything. For Miami we’re go- ing to do the 3rd edition of the saved party and so far we have confirmed Stacey Pullen and Matthias Tanzmann. We will have A few more surprises to come also.

You can catch Nic play at The Dex Club on New Years Eve - we are even giving you the chance to win tickets. Check out www.guestlist. net for your chance to win!
