THE GUESTLIST NETWORK | DECEMBER 2010 REPS
Reps hows it going? I’m good thanks I’m going abroad today so been trying to get stuff sorted!
What are your thoughts on the UK Hip Hop scene is there anyone doing it big right now?
Doing it big right now- it’s pretty healthy right now in terms of the scene, pretty diverse, people like Scandal just got a new mix tape about to come out he’s doing pretty good right now. People like Mystro coming back out after be- ing out ten years ago and also this guy called Skillet he’s someone we associate with another up and coming rapper. London based it’s kind of good it’s a whole new bunch of people coming out and then the people that are doing it who are the big guys five, ten years ago still there like Jest and that, it’s a healthy thing I think its doing good.
You live in Poland?
I actually don’t anymore I did but moved back to London, I was there for about eight months.
What made you more over to Poland?
Basically to promote my record.
What’s the Hip Hop scene over there?
There defiantly open to good music, its quite easy to get a foot hold there’s not as much satura- tion as there is in England its got tones and tones of different groups and rappers
Your new track ‘LIKE 2 PARTY’ was released last month-it became the number one music video on Polish YouTube and gathered over 40,000 views in 2 days. That’s pretty impressive! What do you think of that reaction? Were you surprised?
Not surprised I think I was waiting, we had the video for a while and it was the release of the record, I obviously hoped that would hap- pen, I was waiting for people to latch onto it I guess. I haven’t been out there for a little bit, I go there all the time but haven’t been out there for a period of time, it’s good
HIPHOP//RNB 39 Joanne Bristowe
Smashing stages with his Flash Fry Family, UK rapper REPs has had a big year. From pushing the UK hip hop scene in Poland to the release of his new record- this is British hip hop as we know and love.
to see that the people are still into it, I mean its going up all the time, it’s got some good hits that video which I’m happy about.
Totally random question if you were invisible for the day what mischief would you get up to?
I’d probably go into the Ralph Lawrence shop and just steal everything
You have just released your single on Flash Fry records- tell us a bit about this, how has it been working on an independent label?
You get all the benefits of doing everything yourself your really hands on but you do lack a certain support structure in terms of there’s no one to help you, its good that there is no one because you learn how to do it yourself. You just feel like you need a little push, obviously there’s things we can do and there’s just things we cant do on an independent label, its growing and becoming more familiar in the industry. I think you do get a lot of benefits but it is
a little bit of a struggle if your on your own with it, the more you want it and the more you put into it hopefully it grows into some- thing that can I guess do what we want it to do, promote ourselves.
One last quick question for you what is the greatest les- son that life has taught you? I think its believe in what you want to do in life and not to compro- mise, if you have some faith in what your doing and you continue to do it you will get something out of it. Persistence is key, obviously if you don’t want to do it don’t but if you do believe in it and give everything into it.
REPS new single ‘I Like 2 Party’ is out to buy now on Flash Fly Records.
