With Christmas and NewYear over, the festive fun and frolics have left us bloated and bulging, and in need of help!

Clients will be looking for a way tomake themselves look and feel better in an instant, without all the hassle of diet and exercise. Now you can perk themup than with an instant glow that not only gets them looking like they’ve spent the holidays abroad, but can alsomake themlook up to 10lbs lighter!

We’ve got all the information you need to be in the know about this new phenomenal spray tanning technique - contouring to create a 3D tan.

“Contouring and airbrushing used to be the well kept secret of ‘A’ list celebrities to ensure they always looked toned, tanned and tantalising in photo shoots, on screen or on the catwalk,” saysAnnette Close, Sales andMarketingManager for Australian Bodycare.

But now the secret is out, withmen and women crying out for lengthened limbs, toned tummies, andmagnificentmuscle definition!

“There is no doubt that having a self-tan makes clients feel thinner, sexier and healthier, but recent advancements in tanning products and application techniques have taken self-tanning to the next level,” says Kerri Roberts fromCrazyAngel.

So adapting the products and spray tanning equipment you already ownmeans you can offer a whole new treatment.

NicolaMatthews, CEO of Sienna X Professional SprayTan adds: “By simply employing clever use of shading, spray tan contouring can be used to deliver beautiful results fromnatural lookingmake-up, to a deeper cleavage and even a defined torso.”

what is contouring?

In a nutshell, contouring involves using spray tanning to shade different parts of the body to enhancemuscle definition, and create a slimmer, leaner andmore toned appearance.

Depending on the parts of the body the client wants to enhance, different shading techniques are used to either hollow out a certain area with a darker tan, ormake things stand out using a lighter shade.

Tammy Baker, NationalTrainingManager for StTropez, explains: “The 3DTan offers somuchmore than tans of yesteryear, by offering a deeper, 3D effect that allows depth and definition to be injected into the skin.

“This look pops the skin by applying a selective second application during the spray tan treatment, creating contours and flattening limbs.”

Formen you will be defining their body to achieve amoremasculine look, so concentrate on the abdominals giving a defined six-pack. Other areas to contour include the legs formoremuscle definition, the biceps, and also the shoulder area. Using the correct shading techniques on these parts creates the illusion of bigger and more distinctmuscles.

“Body contouring is not only formen, it can be used to enhance a women’s body, such as the shoulders, collar bone, cleavage, thighs, arms, stomach toning and even highlight the cheekbones,” saysAngela Beattie,Managing Director of A List Bronze.

The aimwith contouring for women is to create a longer and leaner appearance, so shading the limbs and addingmuscle definition on the stomach is key.

not for everyone

With this type of contour tanning, youmust be realistic with clients, and know who it its not going to work for.

For example it will be impossible to try and define a client’s stomach that does not have somemuscle definition there to begin with. Painting a six pack onto a beer belly really won’t work!

“Contoured spray tans are not for the modest unassuming type as you will be drawing attention to what appears to be a toned and sculpted body,” saysAnnette. “It’s great for people who want to hide un- toned areas or define areas such as cheek bones, toned upper arms or six packs,” she adds.

hone your technique So how do you performa 3D tan you ask?

The technique is quite simple, but does require a lot of practice, so it’s best to start off on friends and family before you unleash yourself on clients!

“In order to get the perfect body contouring it is necessary to use aminimumof two concentrations,” saysAngela. “A base tan should be applied to the whole body featuring 10 percent or 12 percent DHA, and then the contours of body should be defined using either a 14 percent or 16 percent DHA.”

Using tan booster dropsmeans you can customise the DHA percentage of your tan solutions, allowing you to get the correct tones fro your client.

“To get the perfect looking contours turn the spray gun down to theminimum dispersion, spray over the depressions of the body very finely and gradually build up the colour. Once dry go over the whole body again with a fine spray of the base colour, thismakes the contours lookmore natural.”
