piece on the surface of the skin to control its abrasion depth, which places the responsibility of a consistent and safe exfoliation in the hands of the skin therapists ‘touch’.
Liquid forms of exfoliation have also been dabbled with, building on the concepts ofMicrodermabrasion. One such idea uses the same closed loop vacuumsystemto ‘pressure wash’ the skin with liquid opposed to the use of crystals.
Yet another systemlightlymists the skin with a solution while simultaneously blowing intense pressurised air against the
skin. This concept claims exfoliation, as well as forced liquidmolecules into the skin via the intense air pressure.
The soft nature of the skin surface, and the pressure intensity needed to propel water hard enough to create the impact of exfoliation, makes abrasion of the skin via water by itself a difficult feat.

The latest wave of exfoliation technology is referred to as Hydrodermabrasion, which has combined the concepts ofMicrodermabrasion, crystal-less Microdermabrasion, and liquid forms of
exfoliation. This technology utilises a closed loop systemand comes with a selection of different levels of abrasive discs that use permanently embedded industrial diamond or corundumcrystals.
Unlike crystal-lessmicrodermabrasion hand pieces that are simply a tube with the abrasivematerial embedded along the rimof the tube, Hydrodermabrasion uses abrasive solid discs that are essentially flat and round in shape, approximately 1
⁄4 inch in diameter, and allow for a very expedient and consistent exfoliation of the skin.
Within the flat abrasion disks are strategically placed holes, which allow for hydration fluids with well-formulated properties to simultaneously finish the exfoliation process while cooling and hydrating the skin at the same time. Manufacturers suggest that upwards of 75 percent of the exfoliation takes place fromthe flat abrasion discs, with the Hydrodermabrasion fluids representing the final 25 percent. Because all of this is taking place inside the clear plastic tip, the closed loop systemeffectively andmeticulously vacuums away any abraded skin and un-absorbed solution.
service time and frequency
Although this service is seemingly less invasive thanMicrodermabrasion due to the combination of technology used, mostmanufacturers are suggesting one week between
services. The service itself takes about the same time as traditionalmicrodermabrasion (7-10minutes), and is applied in a similar pattern over the face and neck using upwardmotions.A recommended series would be four to six services, and highly recommended to combine with microcurrent facial sculpting, ultrasound, LED, and oxygen infusion technology.
At the end of the day, regardless of the science behind the technology, itmust performand translate into visible results in a relatively short period of
time.As Microdermabrasion has now become a staple in the skin care industry, it ismy belief that hydrodermabrasion is literally the next generation and future of safe mechanical exfoliation for the skin therapist!
