dent, worked at Impact Office Products from 1982 until he re- tired in 2009. Earlier in his ca- reer, he was a sales associate for the old Fox-Jones Office Supply Co. in the District. James Joseph Lynagh Jr., a
nativeWashingtonian, was a 1939 graduate of St. John’s College High School.He received a bache- lor’s degree in economics in 1949 from Catholic University, where he was a boxer. He served in the Army during

Army from 1945 to 1968andwasa Vietnam War veteran. His final active-duty assignment was air- field commander at Vung Tau in Vietnam. His military decorations in-
cluded the Bronze StarMedaland three awards of the AirMedal. After his Army service, he
worked for the Federal Aviation Administration until 1984, when he began working as the chief flight-safety inspector for the United Nations. He had assign- ments in the Philippines and Botswana before retiring in 1991. Daniel Richard Keenan, a na-
tive of New York City, moved to Fairfax County in 1967.He lived in Fairfax City before moving to Strasburg, Va., in 2004. His marriage to Patricia

Montgomery County real estate investor and developer who had several unsuccessful bids for pub- lic office, died Nov. 16 of a brain
hemorrhage after he fell at his home in Bethesda. During the 1980s,Mr. Ceccone
started to develop and invest in shopping centers in Laytonsville and Burtonsville. In the 1980s and ’90s, he
became involved in public ser- vice, first as a delegate at the 1984 RepublicanNational Convention. In 1990, he unsuccessfully ran for Montgomery County Executive, losing to Neal Potter. During the 1980s, he failed to win bids for a congressional seat and as aMont- gomery County Council member. He was born in New Rochelle,
N.Y., and moved to the Washing- ton region during the early 1950s. He was a 1964 graduate of High PointHigh School in Beltsville. Earlier in his career, he was a
life insurance sales associate in the District and owned a seafood restaurant, Tails, on CapitolHill. His memberships included
the Lido Civic Club of Washing- ton, Holy Cross Hospital’s Men’s Guild and Silver Spring’s Junior Chamber of Commerce. His marriages to Cecelia Mc-

sonnel staffing specialist forwhat is now known as the ArmyMate- riel Development and Readiness Command in Alexandria from 1968 to 1975, died Nov. 30 at her home in Woodbridge. She had cardiovascular disease. Earlier in her career, Mrs.
Walden was a secretary in the Army’s Office of the Quartermas- ter General. She also worked for the Commerce,Navy, andHealth, Education and Welfare depart- ments. She was born Dorothy Belle
Drinkard in Birmingham, Ala. She received a bachelor’s degree in 1939 from what is now the University of Montevallo in Ala- bama. During World War II, she served with the Women’s Army Corps. After the war, she helped re-
turning veterans obtain their high school diplomas in Birming- ham before moving to the Wash- ington area in the early 1950s. During the 1990s, she was a
volunteer at the Prince William County public library system. Her husband of 19 years,
Charles B.Walden, died in 1973.A stepson, Charles B. Walden Jr., died in 2007. Survivors include a daughter,
Barbara W. Wainman of Wood- bridge; a brother; and three grandchildren.

fourth-generation Washingto- nian and a member of the city’s Our Lady of Victory and Immacu- late Conception Catholic church- es, died Nov. 30 of respiratory failure at her home in the Dis- trict. She was 95. Mary Catherine Mundell was
born in Washington. Her father was a doctor who for decades delivered babies in homes. Mrs. Coffey attended the old
Convent of the Sacred Heart in Washington and later served as president of the school’s alumnae association. She also volunteered with the Christ Child Society. Her husband of 56 years, Rob-
ert J. Coffey, died in 1995. Their daughter, Maureen Coffey Wood, died in 1988. Survivors include four chil-

Born and raised in Northport, Alabama, with his siblings Harriet, Catherine, Rebecca, George, and Elizabeth. John attended and his loyalty was to the University of Alabama.

Passed away on Sunday,December 5, 2010 at Renaissance Garden at Greenspring in Spring- field, VA.Otto is survived by his wife,Martha Doerflinger;four Children Carl W. He began over forty years of Federal service in the mid-1930’sasaReserve Officer in the Civilian Conservation Corps serving in Tennessee and South Carolina. John met his wife Mary Creighton LeonardataCCC social in Fountain Inn, South Carolina and they weremarried on January 7, 1942 in Reidville, South Carolina. With World WarII, John became an Active Duty Commissioned Officer in the Army Corps of Engineers serving in the Pacific Theater making amphibious landings as part of an Engineer Special Brigade. After the War, John returned to Greenville Air Base, South Carolina. For the next twenty-eight years, John, Mary and their three sons lived on various bases in the Caribbean and the southeastern US. His career allowed him to lead the construction of Air Force bases in the Pacific during WW II; at Ramey,Puerto Rico; Homestead, Florida; Thule, Greenland; Keflavik, Iceland and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In 1960, John retired from Active Duty as an Army Officer and became aDepartment of the Army Civilian at the Atlanta Army Depot, Fort Gillem, Georgia.
In 1974, John retired again, and he and Mary returned to her family property in Reidville, South Carolina. John spent his retirement making furniturefor family,volunteering with the Athens YCamp at Tallulah Falls, Georgia in the summer,
and caring for Mary until she died at their home in December 1993.
In 1995, John married his childhood friend and high school sweetheart Kirk Bell Cocke of Talla- hassee, Florida. They lived together in Tallahassee with Kirk’ssister Mary Lou Cantwell until Kirk’s death in 2000. John then moved into Westminster Oaks in Tallahassee.
John was aregistered Professional Engineer in South Carolina; adeacon in the Antioch Presbyter- ian Church in Woodruff, SC; alifetime member of the Society of American Military Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Reserve Officer’sAssociation; and long-time sup- porter of the Thornwell Home in Clinton, South Carolina.
John Hassell leaves three sons and their wives, John Hassell,
Jr.and Barbara of Fairfax, Virginia, LeonardHassell and Kathy of Charlottesville, Virginia and William Hassell and Linda of Spartan- burg, South Carolina; adaughter by marriage, Missy Cocke of Tallahassee, Florida; four grand- children and two great-grandchildren.
John will join his wife Mary at Arlington National Cemetery following afamily graveside service, at a date and time to be determined.

William Edwards Knight, 88, aretired Foreign Service Officer,author,inventor,and World WarIIveteran, passed away peacefully on November 3,2010 at Prince George’sHospital Center after abrief bout with pneumonia. He is survived by his loving wife Ruth; sons, Peter and Jeffrey; daughters-in-law,Zanna and Sheryl, and grandchildren, Michael, Sam and Charlotte Knight.
Bill was born in Tarrytown, NY on February 1, 1922, the youngest of the six children of Arthur O. and Mabel Jenkins Knight. He received aBAfrom Yale University in 1943 and entered the US Army Air Corps,where he served as apilot in the 376th Heavy Bombardment Group of the Fifteenth Airforce in southern Italy and flew 32 missions against Germany from December 1944 through April 1945.
After the war,heearned aMasters degree in International Relations at Yale where he met Ruth Lee,whom he married in 1946, shortly before joining the State Department for acareer which lasted until 1975. He served in Genoa, Rome,Reykjavik, Canberra and lastly Manila, where he was Deputy Chief
Upon retirement, and remaining in the DC area, he turned his energies to alifelong obsession: inventing.Heearned anumber of patents and launched abusiness –Aaraluen Enterprises –tocommercialize one which attached stretchers to backpack frames, which reduced manpower needs in wilder- ness rescue.Hethen turned to writing, launching aseries of thrillers,The Tiger Game, The Bamboo Game,The Devil’sEnd Game (also published in Italy), as well as Footprints in the Sand, abook of poetry (mostly humor- ous and favoring the limerick form) and an autobiography /history of the Knight Family, Letter to the Twenty-Second Century (1998). He described it as “a bridge attempting to link past, present and future,hopefully providing distant descendants some understanding of their roots…a middle class lot, living out our spans in hardworking, functional families contending with the ordinary vicissitudes of life.”
In retirement, he and Ruth travelled regularly to Europe and the Caribbean, actively pur- sued their addiction to tennis with many friends at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, and spent summers in Randolph, New Hampshire,hiking in the White Moun- tains,a love Bill pursued his entire life.He served as President and in other capacities in the Randolph Mountain Club and the Ran- dolph Foundation. Bill’sashes will be laid to rest in aColonial graveyard in Randolph facing Mounts Madison and Adams,with a memorial stone inscribed with Bill’swords: “In the exploding emptiness of black space, We have ridden our kindly blue dot. What incredible luck!”
