Completed helmet after three coats of UC 35 House of Kolor clear. I hope you found this article helpful and can use some of these techniques in your next helmet project. Please send
us pictures of the next helmet you paint to showecase here in the magazine Readers Gallery.
STEP 1: Start with a bare metal or aluminum panel. I’m using a 12x18 sign blank metal panel. Clean the surface with a good wax and grease remover. Using coarse sand paper, scuff the entire sur- face of the panel. For this I used a drill with a sanding disc attached. A DA sander will work just as well.
STEP 2: To create the unique lighting effect, by adding deep grooves to the surface, use a grinder to make your desired pattern. Using dif- ferent hardness grinding wheels will affect the width that the groove creates. Once you have finished grinding, spray off and clean the surface again. Apply a couple coats of adhesion promoter to the panel, this will help the clear to stick. Be careful not to apply to thick of a coat, or it will run. Next apply several coats of clear, which is needed to keep the panel from oxidizing and/or rusting. Plus this gives you a good surface to work from. Once the clear is dry, sand it with some 800 grit sandpaper.
