Here is a picture of the preparation completed. The primer has been sanded a last time with 320 grit paper. You can’t feel any difference between the tank clear coat and the repair job. If you feel even a little difference over the edges between the clear and primer, you will get a halo all around your repair area job after the paint work. It means that you have to sand it better, maybe add a an- other coat of primer and do it again.
I clean the surface with degreaser and tack cloth. It’s time to prepare your mixture and do your paint colour. After a quick look under the tank I can see that the base coat used to create this paint colour is black. Often you can see under the tank how co- lour is done because the base coat is well done over the full tank but the pearl job has been done perfectly only over the visible parts. In my case the under middle part of my tank is black with only just a a little overspray of pearls! To be sure and get a big image of the pearls colour, with my camera I take many pictures under different light (Flash, sun, shadow)! I enlarge the pictures on my computer (photoshop) to see better which pearl colour I will have to use. I spray black base coat over the primer and all around very lightly to get a nice shade be- tween the black and the original colour.
To keep a very thin texture and avoid a thick coat of paint; I over reduce my SG100. In my SG100 I add equally parts of green pearl and purple pearl with just a touch of gold pearl. That’s what I see on the tank and on my detail pic- ture on the computer. On my black test panel, I spray the mixture with very thin coat until I get the same base grey colour. Even if the name of the colour is “black pearl” the colour seems to be metallic grey in shadow and becomes black with pearl effect under the sun. I compare the grey colour between the good side of the tank and my test pan- el! The grey is ok! Now it’s time to do the tank painting. As the pearl effect is only visible under the sun I just focus on the grey colour. With my airbrush 0.3 needle I spray the pearls with high pressure quiet far from the surface. I spray very thin coats letting overspray float even around the dent . You have to avoid spraying wet coats otherwise the pearls will not have the same effect where you have sprayed dry and wet coats. Work slowly and get it right the first time. When I get no colour difference on my grey tone between the tank and the repaired area, I stop and just spray a very light coat of SG100 to fix better the over- spray on the surface.
