Harley Repair and Touch Up by Patrick Charuel
In this step by step I will try too explain how to manage a touch up job over a tank and back fender. The scratch is located in the roundess part of the tank; this is most dif- ficult because you will have to think about the curve of the tank not only in one direction but in all. The second part of this step by step will explain to you how to find a paint colour. This paint on this bike is original Harley Davidson Black pearl. The problem is that if you can’t get this paint colour like me in France, this colour is not referenced in all the French paint maker, it’s becoming impossible to get it! Harley shop’s here don’t sell paint to oblige the customer to order new painted pieces! A paint company can scan the paint and find the right formula to do it but it takes time and money, too much expensive for just few grams of paint for
a little touch up job like this. Ordering it from USA is also very expensive because of the shipping cost of dangerous products. You will see that you can do it for very cheap price comparing to the Harley paint!. Materiels Used: Polyesther mastic (like Bondo), Black base, SG100 or another binder, three colours of pearls ( you can purchase in USA 25 grams bag of all kind of Pearls (small, medium, large , satin, of all colours : for $9.00 each) When you see that you only need a coffee spoon of pearl to paint a full bike , the accounting is quickly done! I have many kinds of pearls and I always do paint colour myself saving a lot of money for the same result obtained with a very expen- sive pearl paint from a paint company!
Here is a picture of the dent on the tank. Keep in mind that you have to fill it by following the natu- ral curve done by theses tangents lines. The prob- lem is that you have to think about the same thing with the transversal tangents because the tank in not flat. In fact, you have to follow the tangents all around the dent. It sounds hard to achieve but very simple to do.
With 320 grit sand paper I sand into the hole and around the dent so the mastic will adhere.
