My name is Diana Childress, aka: KD. I was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona and now live in East Texas. I have been drawing and painting all my life but when I picked up the airbrush I was hooked; it became my passion. After five years I still love airbrushing and have no intention of ever quitting. I have a small shop in East Texas and am looking forward to expanding as my business grows. This is a simple black and white portrait of Bob Dylan. Using Comart paint - colors , Opaque Black, Opaque White, and Opaque Phthalo Blue, and an Iwata HP-C airbrush @ 30 PSI, on size 18 X 24 Montaval water color paper.
Step one: I marked out my portrait on my water color paper with a black water color pencil. I use black on this project because it will be done almost entirely in black. I don’t have a projector so I use my scanner to make a copy of the desired size and then trace it on to my water color paper. Next step is to add a touch of the Pthalo blue to the areas of the image that will be in shadow. Keep your airbrush moving here don’t over do it, just a touch of color will do for now.
Step 2: Now I’ll move on to the Opaque black using it to just outline the outer edge of the shaded areas. Don’t worry about a little over spray; this will actually help this portrait.
Step 3: Now all I want to do here is fill in the hair, suit and eye along with the shaded side of the face with opaque black. Again overspray is not a problem, but be a little careful around the eye area. We will be sharpening that up in the next step.
Step 4: Now all there is to do is sharpen the area around the eye and add a touch more Pthalo blue to the areas of overspray. Add a touch of Pthalo blue under the eye, mouth, ear and around the chin. Repeat that step to the shaded side of the nose, up the side of the face and shirt collar. Keep your airbrush moving at all times you just want a hint of blue here. Now sharpen the reflection in the eye with Opaque white, and whala ! You have just done a portrait using only three colors.
