This is the second piece I’ve airbrushed for a customer on what is quickly becoming a tribute to America and his military service. I’m always excited and honored to paint for veterans, and this project was no different. For this project I used a variety of Wicked Colors, Auto Air, and Auto Borne paints, an overhead projector, and Conform 4075 RLA transfer tape. I’m not a tech saavy guy, so I did alot of this “old school”.


The customer brought me a T-shirt and want- ed the basic design to be painted on his truck, although he wanted to change the wording and lettering layout. I first took a digital picture of the t-shirt, uploaded it into the computer, and printed it on a transparency film. I then used Microsoft Word Art for the lettering, and printed that onto a separate transpar- ency film.


The truck was scuffed with a grey scotch brite pad and degreased using a wax and grease remover. I then used the Conform transfer tape to mask off the area that I would be paint- ing. I projected the images onto the side of the truck, and used a sharpie marker to trace the image onto my masking.


I decided it would be easiest to work from the back to the front on this project, so I start with the flag. I carefully cut my design and remove all the masking from the areas that will be either blue or white (leaving the red stripes covered). I spray the stripes and the union white. I allow my open edges of the flag to fade away, as I will not be incorporating a border into the artwork. I then remove the masking for the red stripes.
