The tool I use to apply the two part mastic is a flexible metal rule. The metal ruler is the perfect object to follow the tank shape; you can also curve it more or less by pull- ing it during the mastic work. Both sides of the metal ruler are applied on the tank tangents around the impact. Fill the hole with mastic, a little bit more than you need, place the ruler far from your dent by placing it as if you want to follow the tank shape. Then pull slowly the ruler in the direction of the dent, don’t control what happened to the mastic but just focus to keeping the metal ruler on the tank shape. If you keep the rulers edge following the tank shape, it will curve automatically the flexible metal ruler and you will fill naturally the mastic by following all the tan- gents.
With the mastic dry it’s ready to be sanded with 320 grit paper and sanding block, sand the mastic by following the tank shape (curve of the tank!) Your reference surface is the clear coat around the mastic. Sand slowly with large movements without going through the clear; if that does happen a little bit you won’t have a problem with your paint job but you have to avoid it to keep a perfect tangent refer- ence surface. Don’t forget that your sand move- ment has to follow all the directions. There is no chance to complete this in one shot you will have probably have to do the same job (from mastic to sand) three or four times.
Because it’s quiet impossible to control if your job is perfect, I spray a coat of water base primer over the dent which I sand it with 320 grit paper when its dry. I use water base primer because I can remove the overspray from the tank easily by swiping the surface with cleaner thinner. After the acrylic sand- ing job, you will see where you have to fill more with mastic. Add mastic, sand, spray primer …..
