Q …. Is your artwork planned or spontaneous for the most part?
A …. It’s mostly spontaneous. I usually have a general idea and go with the first sketch and just let it happen.
Q …. Do you use a computer, plotter to help with design ideas? A …. Sometimes I’ll superimpose an idea over a photograph of whatever I’m designing to see how it looks. But everything starts from an original sketch. I don’t create anything in the computer.
Q …. What inspires you to paint? A …. The waves, the ocean, anything in nature.
Q …. What keeps you motivated on those days when you just don’t feel like painting but commission work needs to get done?
A …. My wife and kid. I have to feed the family! I use music to get me going on big projects. I’ll listen to the same album over and over until the projects’ done.
Q … Who are some artists you have worked with? A …. I’ve painted collaborations with tattoo artist Mark Long- necker of Cocoa Beach, Fla. We both love to surf and paint surfboards. Last April Longnecker convinced me to give him a tattoo. I had never held a tattoo machine before, but I was amazed at how similar it was to an airbrush, so it felt natural to me. I tattooed a bad-ass screaming goldfish on his calf. Not bad for my first tattoo!
Q …. What advice do you have for those just looking into ways of expressing themselves thru art as a possible career? A …. First I would say that it is an absolute, viable career. You just have to find your niche. For me it was surfboards and it expanded from there. It’s a job, just like anything else. You have to show up and work every day. I think painting surfboards really showed me that; I had to show up and paint my ten surfboards every day. It was work, but it felt good that I got to paint cool stuff and get paid to do it.
