I mask over the red and white stripes to protect them from overspray while I work on the union. I mask my stars directly on the white to protect them from the blue I’m using for the union (this way they remain white). Once I have the blue ap- plied, I remove the stars, and dust a bit of blue on them as well. I remove the masking from the stripes, and add my shad- ows and highlights on the rolls of the flag using the same blue for the shadows, and white for the highlights.
I wanted to pull out some tricks I picked up from Mickey Harris, and add the stitching to the stars and stripes. I begin by putting a small dot in the middle of the star and dividing the star into 5 sections.
I spray in tiny lines in each section of the star. I am using an Iwata Eclipse HP-BCS .5mm brush for this. I would recommend using a brush with a smaller nozzle to make things easier, but all of my small brushes are out of commission right now.
