One way that Axis Communications, a network video provider, shows its com- mitment to its partners is through offering in-depth training at the Axis Communi- cations Academy. The academy is now extending its offering of online courses to anyone who is interested. The company points out that with the ongoing migration from analog CCTV to IP-based surveillance there is a constant and growing demand for education on the latest technology innovations and applica- tions. Axis has been offering its customers and partners training courses on the differ- ent aspects of IP surveillance at various Axis Communications Academies around the world for several years. However, now, for a variety of e-learning courses it is no longer necessary to be a partner to take part. Anyone interested can now log on to the academy site and register for these free online courses. Who Should ‘Pick up the Check’ for Training?


With companies like Axis opening up training for free to the general public, a new report from IMS Research examines a timely question popping up regarding growth in the wireless video surveillance market — “Who should pay for the train- ing?” According to the report, one of the main factors limiting growth in the wireless video surveillance market is the knowledge and skill-base of security sys- tems integrators. Most integrators and installers of video surveillance equip- ment use wireless technology as a last resort and are much more comfortable with wired networking. Despite this, the market is forecast to grow at 20 percent in the Americas, but has the potential to grow even faster.


One factor slowing growth is a need for training. IMS reports that the cost of training remains a point of conflict between systems integrators and the manufacturers of wireless infrastruc- ture equipment. The majority of systems integrators interviewed for the research stated that vendors should not charge for a basic level of product training, sales support or technical support. That being said, they felt that on-site system design could legitimately be billed separately. “The market is in a ‘catch 22’ situa-


tion,” commented Niall Jenkins, senior research analyst at IMS Research. “Inte- grators need training in the equipment before they can win wireless video sur- veillance projects but are unwilling to


pay for the training because there is no guarantee they will win these proj- ects. Wireless equipment manufacturers need integrators to be trained to win wireless projects but are unwilling to provide the training for free because there is no guarantee this will translate into sales revenue. “Going forward, both parties will need


to make compromises,” continued Jen- kins. “It is likely that less expensive online training will be provided free of charge and supplemented by advanced train- ing that is charged for.
