previous analog-based system, the ven- dor had to come out to our data center and work with us to sift through footage and export it for investigative purposes,” Peterson explained. “With Avigilon, we can manipulate the footage ourselves, giving us greater control over our inves- tigations and dramatically expediting the entire process.”
MEETING IT NEEDS For Arlis Botner, network manager at Merced College, the fact that the Avi- gilon HD surveillance system did not require proprietary hardware was another great selling feature. “We had some chal- lenges maintaining the proprietary hard- ware of our previous system, so finding a new surveillance solution that could run on any platform was essential,” Botner explained. In addition, the college’s pre- vious solution required special network- ing that needed a lot of upkeep to run properly. “The Avigilon HD surveillance system just simply works,” Botner said. The fact that the college can leverage its existing analog cameras was also an important consideration. “As a budget- driven organization, we also liked the fact that we could keep our existing cameras but have the flexibility to transition to HD over time,” Botner added.

tions and ultimately, greater conflict reso- lution. “In the past, we typically would only investigate an incident once a month or even every other month,” Donaldson noted. “Now, we are always reviewing footage because it is so much more use- able than before.” As a result, the college can achieve greater coverage and ultimate- ly, greater security for staff and students. In addition, the security team at Mer- ced College can solve issues much faster than before. “With more control over the system, greater image clarity, and advanced zooming capabilities, we have reduced the time it takes to conduct an investigation from days to just minutes — and our success level has skyrock- eted,” Wilde claimed.
STUDENT SAFETY ON OPEN CAMPUS Merced College is committed to creating a safe, yet open campus environment that promotes improved student achievement and well-being. With several initiatives in place, including “code blue” secu- rity telephones that provide direct-dial access to security staff, a campus-wide announcement system for emergency reporting, its own police department and the Avigilon HD surveillance system, the college is well-positioned to meet its security goals.
installed three lanes of Fastlane ClearStyle 200 in its headquarters. When constructing the new building for its headquarters, the customer decided to install optical turnstiles to better protect the oper- ations and to help raise the level of security awareness. Three lanes were installed at the employee-only entrance to address the problem of employees piggybacking and sharing access cards. Fastlane ClearStyle 200’s non-barrier solution is consis- tent with the open and friendly cul- ture of the organization. Any unau- thorized access sounds an alarm and puts the sliding glass doors just beyond the turnstiles in lockdown.

Axis Communications (

This year marks the twelfth year that Lenel provided products and services for the access control and digital video security solution that it donates annually to the event. The system includes Axis network cameras deployed around the sta- dium and dormitory complex where the international athletes live dur- ing their stay. Lenel’s video man- agement system allowed security personnel to control and monitor the network cameras remotely, while Lenel IntelligentVideo analyt-
