CARS TOON: MATER’S TALL TALES
Disney releases Mater’s Tall Tales after taking back the video game rights for popular Pixar movie Cars. James Batchelor looks at how this latest instalment will refuel the brand
CARS MAY not be the most popular of Pixar’s acclaimed movies, but in games it has a great track record. Since the movie’s debut in 2006, previous licence holder THQ produced a string of racing games based on the characters, including Cars: Mater-Nationaland last year’s Cars: Race-O-Rama.
Now the video game rights are back in the hands of Disney, and the company is targeting a crucial audience with the Wii-exclusive Cars Toon: Mater’s Tall Tales. The game is the latest of Disney’s Mania!titles – a multiplayer-centric brand launched last year with Toy Story Mania!
MATER OF FACT
As the title suggests, the game revolves around the loveable pickup
truck Mater, who constantly beguiles his friends with unlikely stories of his past achievements. These claims form the basis of more than 30 mini-games.
FAMILY VEHICLES
Each game supports up to four players, pitting families and friends against each other as they compete for the highest score. The mini- games all make use of the Wii Remote, whether they require the motion sensor or buttons. Examples of mini-games include Mater the Greater, in which players attempt death-defying stunts; El Materdor, in which they take on angry bulls; and Rescue Squad Mater, where they must catch falling objects. The appeal of Cars Toon: Mater’s Tall Talesis clear.
The game recreates the endearing, imaginative vision of Pixar – which made the film so popular with families and younger viewers – so the game is instantly recognisable to mainstream and casual shoppers. Throw in the Mania!label’s own brand of mini-games and multiplayer experiences, and the game is one of the most family- friendly titles heading to Wii this Christmas. Carsremains A key gaming property for Disney’s Nintendo-loving demographic and Cars Toon: Mater’s Tall Taleswill ensure that it remains that way for some time to come. The game hits stores for Wii on November 5th.
Players can take control of Mater the lovable pickup truck in order to complete a variety of mini-games
