OFF THE RECORD TAG-TEAM INTERVIEW
This week, Centresoft’s Margaret Pearson quizzes Sony’s sales boss Mark Howsen about Move, 3D gaming and fridges
505 Games sponsored this year’s pre-show party, quickly anaesthetising guests with the first round of drinks and John Travolta wailing.
Margaret Pearson, Commercial Director, Centresoft
Namco decked the bar with Splatterhouseartwork for the after-show party – not that blood and gore could ever put the industry off drinking.
You started your career selling Morgue fridges. Did you think this was a role with promotion prospects or was it just a dead end job? I like what you did there. My interest in dead bodies aside, I’ve always believed you should start at the bottom – and let’s face it, from there the only way was up.
Sony recently launched PlayStation Move. How do you see this changing the future of gaming? Move is positioned as a casual gaming experience, but I think, overall, it is a great enabler/leveller. So, for example, in the future my mother might well enjoy kicking my arse in Killzone 3 multiplayer. As an input device it’s also got so much potential outside of games.
You’re a Northern boy. Was it a culture shock when you first moved down South? Initially, but as soon as the blood thinned and I stopped sweating everything worked out just fine.
Ubisoft rolled up with a nice car and even nicer ladies, to pose with attendees. There’s a few hope-my-girlfriend-doesn’t- see-this expressions above.

What do you see as the key successes from Sony and also from your competitors? For us, one of the things we’re proud of is that we’ve consistently done a good job getting the value for money message across. I think all our successes this Christmas are linked to getting consumers

excited about the experience that games can deliver.
What was the first video game that you played, and what’s your game of choice at the moment? At home it was Jetpacon the ZX Spectrum – hours of fun without an end (or a point).
I’ve just started playing MAG again with the new Move enhancement and I love FIFA 11(what’s not to like?).
How do you see 3DTV technology changing the way in which consumers use their PlayStation 3? There’s the whole 3D movie piece, but for games it’s even more compelling. I think better depth perception in games really heightens the level of engagement and enjoyment you have. Gran Turismo 5in 3D convinced me that I really, really need a 3DTV –my wife isn’t buying it for me though.
You have just attended Centresoft’s annual Sales Rally. What’s your most memorable moment from an industry event? There have been so many great acceptance speeches from Doug Bone, but for me it has to be the late night bar debate over an Otter vs Badger fight after the MCV Awards.
Who will you be interviewing for Tag Team next week? John Stanhope, Tesco.
