RECOMMENDED: SUPER SCRIBBLENAUTS

THE ORIGINAL Scribblenautshad a remarkable buzz around it for a DS game, championed for its innovation and unique approach to puzzle gaming.

It was hailed by many as one of the best games of E3 2009 – even more impressive when you think it was showcased alongside the likes of Modern Warfare 2, Assassin’s Creed IIand Uncharted 2. The buzz behind the sequel Super Scribblenautsis just as high, with the game receiving similar accolades to its predecessor at this year’s E3.

SCRIBBLE ME THIS Like the first title, Super Scribblenautsis a puzzle game with a difference. Players control a young boy in a rooster hat named Maxwell, who must collect stars to complete each puzzle and move on to the next stage.

He has plenty of tools at his disposal but rather than forcing gamers to solve each level with a preset selection of objects, they can summon almost anything they can think of. Typing in the name of an object, animal or vehicle spawns a cartoon version of it in-game. So if Maxwell needs to reach a higher area, he can create a ladder and climb up or strap on a jetpack and fly. Not only are there more words than ever to choose from in Super Scribblenauts– over 10,000, in fact – but players can now elaborate on them with adjectives.

By adding an adjective, gamers can customise the behaviour and appearance of whatever they summon – whether it’s a funky pink elephant or a blue flying zombie.

SUMMONING THE MASSES The original game was a hit, but Warner Bros is determined to get Super Scribblenautsin the hands of more mainstream gamers. In addition to the marketing campaign (see ‘Promotional Scribbles’), a few tweaks to the game mean that hints can now be purchased with in-game currency. The Scribblenautsseries remains one of the most innovative properties available on the DS, and its Supersequel should provide plenty of entertainment for anyone that has exhausted the original.
