BettingBusinessInteractive • OCTOBER 2010 EiG 2010 CONFERENCE Bringing lotteries into online gaming

One of the more interesting panel discussions at EiG this year will be how an increasing number of lotteries are joining the igaming sphere.

ne of the speakers on the sec- ond day is Zarko Zuvela, games development director at the Croatian Lottery. He has responsibility for games development (sports betting, lotto, keno, bingo, instant and scratch games), and new sales distri- bution channels (internet, mobile, VLTs, and small gaming terminals).

Zuvela, who is speaking on the subject of ‘Lotteries meet online gambling’, ex- plained that online gambling has just be- come available in the country. “Croatia’s

gaming market is classified into four categories: lottery games, betting games, slot machine clubs and casino,” he said. “Croatian Lottery provides games in all cate- gories, and now we have the opportunity to provide all these games online. The legal environment for on- line gaming was completed in June 2010, and Croatian Lottery started its online operations in the first week

of September. At the start there was the full portfolio of our lottery number games (Lotto 7/39, Super 7, Joker, Lotto 6/45, TV Bingo 15/90, Super Bingo and Keno) and with fixed odds betting. In the near future we will present electronic scratch cards and some interactive 3D games. Next year we’ll present online casino and poker.” The Croatian Lottery has some restric- tions under the new laws still, and also faces competition from the private sector - unlike many European markets. Zuvela said: “We are licensed to provide online

games only to Croatian citizens. We will obey that restriction. We can provide games for all categories, after we meet the list of law requirements. Croatia’s gaming market is not restricted to private opera- tors, we have more than 70 private compa- nies licensed for gaming operations. Two of them already provide online betting to- gether with their land-based operations.” Zuvela also sees much crossover be- tween his company’s new distribution channel and its traditional one. He com- mented: “We will definitely have lot of syn- ergy between online and land-based oper- ations. First, our land-based players will go online. We will have player account de- posit and redraw options in our shops and many advertising options. We will have games options specially designed to con- tribute from this synergy.”

Also speaking on the lotteries panel will be Danske Spil’s Lars Runov, Kevin Gass of the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, and Marcus Geiss of Giochi24 with the whole thing moderated by Martin Oelber- mann, owner of Media & Entertainment Consulting Network (MECN).

Bigger and better E

iG organiser Clarion Events antici- pates a bigger and better show than

ever before, with delegate numbers out- stripping previous years. Clarion’s Yeemay Huang explained: “EiG is the largest and most established event for the igaming industry, so anyone involved in and responsible for growing their igaming business should certainly attend to really find out where the growth opportunities are (and that includes new markets and new products) and to network with key in- fluencers who are pushing this industry forward, including regulators, politicians and industry figures.”

The expansion of the igaming sector into newly regulated jurisdictions and the growing clamour for B2G contracts has also provided EiG with an opportunity that Clarion has looked to optimise. Huang added: “We have also made a lot of effort to attract new entrants to the igaming arena, including lotteries, land-based casinos, media and entertainment brands and social gaming developers, who will look for partners at EiG and will want to learn from and benchmark with the igam- ing leaders.”
