Consumer confidence drives recovery
Recent figures released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) show that international scheduled freight traffic showed a 26.5 percent improvement in June, following a 30.4 percent rise inMay. Speaking in August, IATA director
general and CEO Giovanni Bisignani said that air cargo volumes for the first half of
the year “remain 6 percent above the pre-recession peak in early 2008”. Although it was noted that the European air freight business, due to a slower rate of economic growth, is only expanding at
half the rate of the fastest-growing regions, like Asia Pacific, the view onmany fronts is that the new highs in air freight demand are being driven by a rush to restock low inventories now that consumers have begun to feel that the recession is now behind them. These people want to buy consumer goods, particularly high-tech and luxury items – and they want themdelivered right away! Delivery on demand – that’s what the air freight industry
thrives on. So let us hope that consumer confidence continues and pushes a real recovery inmanufacturing prosperity.
