China improves its cargo
When people talk about air cargo gateways within China, the established centres of Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong no longer monopolise the conversation. Chinese air freight opportunities are expanding, as more and more of the country’s major commercial centres upgrade their airport facilities and open direct air links with the rest of the world. hongqing is a city that lacks the glamour and glitz of established commercial centres like Shanghai, but it is a name people in the West are going to be hearing a great deal more of in the coming years as an engine of economic
growth. It was the fastest-growing municipal economy in China last year, with its GDP climbing in double figures. Claiming a population of 32 million people, it also happens to be the world’s largest municipality. As China’s eastern seaboard becomes increasingly wealthy, it is inland cities to the west such as Chongqing that have become the next wave of manufacturing powerhouses. In August last year, Chongqing Jiangbei airport
announced that it was lengthening its second runway to 10 AIR LOGISTICSCHINA
cater for increasing air cargo volumes, specifically citing new-technology providers HP and Foxconn who have both recently made major commitments to the city. The second runway will be extended by 400 metres to 3,600 metres. The municipal committee involved in transport noted
that the current annual air cargo capacity at Chongqing is less than 200,000 tons and it is still a ‘blank’ on the radar screens in Europe and America as an air cargo gateway. The establishment of HP and Foxconn’s computer base would double the air cargo volume transiting Chongqing, the committee estimated. HP and Foxconn signed an agreement with Chongqing
in early August 2009 involving two investment projects which will ultimately produce 20 million laptops a year
