Cathay Pacific Services and it is scheduled for completion in 2013. The facility will have an annual cargo handling capacity of 2.6 million tonnes, bringing the total design capacity at Hong Kong International airport to 7.4 million tonnes a year.”

If you could change one thing about your airport, what would it be?

“We are very pleased with our air cargo performance, which is the natural result of recovering manufacturing activities in the neighbouring Pearl River Delta region and, to a lesser extent, other regions of the China mainland. “According to Airports Council International (ACI),

Hong Kong International airport was the world’s busiest international cargo airport and second-busiest in terms of total tonnage in 2009. Currently, we have 27 all-cargo airlines operating at the airport. An average of 150-160 freighters fly in and out each day. “We will continue to improve our facilities and services,

and work with our government and airlines to further expand freighter services to Hong Kong from the rest of the world.”

Do you fear the growing competition from the freight gateways on the China mainland?

Do you expect cargo throughput to continue to increase at this high rate in the foreseeable future?

“Yes, we are optimistic that air cargo demand will continue to see robust growth, although percentages of growth may not be as high as those in the last few months as the base for comparison would be higher.”

What plans do you have for improvements over the coming months in terms of infrastructure or other aspects of your operations?

“The current cargo facilities at the airport are adequate to handle the forecast growth in the foreseeable future. To cater for medium-term demand, we are studying a midfield

“It is important to recognise that demand for air transportation in Hong Kong and on the mainland will continue to expand as a result of the economic development of mainland China and further growth in international trade between China and other countries in the world. We have seen a sustained growth rate in the economy of mainland China in past years, and there is no indication that this will change or slow down. “That being the case, the air cargo market will continue to

grow, and we believe the country’s main gateway airports, such as Shanghai and Guangzhou, will take up their respective, rightful, shares of the market, while Hong Kong will also continue to grow. “Hong Kong has attained the number one position

in international air cargo throughput due to its unique competitive advantages, such as a very well-developed trading industry in Hong Kong; a very extensive network of international freighter and passenger services at its airport; and a well-established logistics industry headquartered in Hong Kong. “These competitive advantages will continue to enable

us to compete strongly for a good share of the growing air cargo market in coming years.”
