keynote feature Shanghai: China’s number one

CHINA is on course to become the leading air freight nation in the world, delegates attending the Air Cargo China 2010 conference in Shanghai were told earlier this year. China Cargo Airlines executive

deputy general manager Gao Pei predicted: “In the next 20 years, cargo handling volume and turnover volume of China will stand in the leading position of the world air

cargo market.” China’s rise will probably see

Shanghai soar as the leading freight airport in the nation. “In 2009, the cargo volume of Shanghai accounted for 35 percent of the whole country. Pudong airport has became the number three global air cargo hub,” he noted. The cargo handling volume

achieved by Shanghai-based China

Cargo Airlines accounts for 36.5 percent of all air freight on the move in China, and for more than 70 percent of Shanghai’s cargo throughput. At present, the company operates 27 all-cargo routes.

Gao – China will lead the world air cargo market

At present, Tianjin Binhai district has become one of the

most active aviation industry development areas in China, with more than 10 well-known aviation and supporting enterprises settled here including Airbus (Tianjin) Final Assembly Co and Xi’an Aircraft International Aviation Manufacturing (Tianjin) Co. In addition, as an important cargo transportation hub

two parallel taxiways. A new international cargo station of 11,000 square metres will also be built. At present, the nation’s three domestic air giants, Air

China, China Southern and China Eastern, have set up bases in Wuhan. Moreover, more than 20 domestic and overseas airlines also call at Wuhan.

TIANJIN’S HUB ASPIRATIONS The first industry fund dedicated to the needs of the aviation business was established in Tianjin, in the north-east of the country, on 6 July. Managed by Yufeng Fund Management, the fund was co-initiated by China Construction Bank and China Aviation Industry Group. The total amount raised by this fund is expected to exceed RMB20 billion ($2.95 billion). It is the first aviation industry investment fund initiated,

raised and established by China. In the past, most aviation construction projects in the People’s Republic were centred around the military, which falls under the control of the state. This limited the amount of capital flow available and the fast development of the aviation industry. The establishment of the China aviation fund will attract private capital – a similar fund for ships, founded last year, has been very active in its first 12 months of operation.

in northern China, Tianjin has attracted many air cargo carriers. Hainan Airlines, one of the largest air carriers in China, set up its north China headquarters in Tianjin recently to better develop the company’s business in the region. Furthermore, Okay Airways, the revived domestic private airline, has designated Tianjin as its cargo hub. The injection from the aviation fund will be an attraction

to aviation manufacturers, parts dealers, airlines and express companies – helping cement the city as an aviation hub. “Once the funds have been settled, the followers will pour in,” a spokesman for the fund believes. South Korean carrier Asiana Airlines has just launched

the operation of another international cargo route through Tianjin, operating on a Brussels - Tianjin - Incheon routeing. The first flight from Brussels arrived at Tianjin Binhai International airport on 24 June. Tianjin is in direct
