interview
STANLEY HUI is CEO of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK), which oversees the operation of the world’s busiest airport in terms of international freight. In his earlier career he served as chief operating officer of all-cargo carrier Air Hong Kong and then CEO of Hong Kong-based Dragonair, before joining AAHK in December 2006
The recent figures for freight throughput at Hong Kong International airport look very good indeed, so are you riding on the crest of a wave at the moment?
“Thanks to the economic rebound, our air traffic has continued to improve since the last quarter in 2009. Stronger demand has led to higher load factors for freighter services and resulted in better economics for the airlines, which in turn encourage airlines to operate more flights. “Hong Kong International airport continued to
be the world’s busiest international cargo gateway in 2009, a title that it has held since 1996.”

On which routes are you seeing the biggest cargo gains?
“The strong cargo growth in recent months is mainly attributable to the global economic rebound and the continued recovery of Hong Kong’s key export markets, particularly North America and Europe. “Europe is the largest cargo market at Hong
Kong International airport, accounting for 18 percent of the airport’s total cargo throughput of 3.6 million tonnes in 2009/10. The second- largest market is South-East Asia, which accounts for 16 percent, followed by the US and Canada, representing 15 percent of the total.”
