competition with Qingdao to the south for cargo stops on the Japan/Korea to Europe routes. Tianjin has been designated by the Chinese central government as a major logistics hub and the whole district of Binhai, where the airport is located, has seen enormous change in the past couple of years to make it a smooth exit for exports.

QINGDAO GOES INTERCONTINENTAL Qingdao airport in the north-east of China has the ambition to link with airports from all over the world. US- based Atlas Air officially launched a direct cargo flight to Houston on 16 May, using a B747-200F and giving Qingdao its first ever direct intercontinental route. To speed up its air hub construction dreams and

achieve a breakthrough in expanding its overseas reach, Qingdao airport last year set up a special team to handle the expansion of its route network. Currently, the airport is negotiating with the largest airline in the US, Delta Air Lines, the largest one in Germany, Lufthansa, and the largest in China, China Southern, to see if more international routes can be added. An official said: “The cargo business is developing very well. Last year, the airport achieved a cargo throughput of

135,000 tons. It is expected to reach 150,000 tons this year. At present, Qingdao airport is in talks with many airlines to open another intercontinental route by the end of this year or early next year.” It is understood that a Qingdao - Europe cargo flight may well be on the cards shortly. Xiamen, the city that lies across the strait from southern

Taiwan, is fast climbing the cargo ranks. For the first time ever, it has crept into the top 20 of container ports, attracting much freight from Taiwan. Its air freight volume is set to jump too. Singapore Airlines Cargo (SIA Cargo) suspended its routes

from Xiamen to Europe and Singapore in the wake of the global financial crisis. But, with regional manufacturing now picking up again across China, SIA has resumed flights from the city in Fujian province, according to Xu Zhiyong, manager of the carrier’s southern China region. Cargo volumes out of Xiamen have leapt by around 35

percent in the first six months of this year compared to 2009, said Cai Zuming, general manager of the local air cargo terminal. The eastern China city now ranks number five in the country for freight volumes. Wang Xiaolin, an official from the airport, said a new cargo ramp and station will be constructed according
